64 / 65 GTO cooling fan rivet variations
I noticed that a recently purchased curved tip aluminum blade cooling fan, supposedly from a 65 GTO, had round rivet heads while the 3 other curved tip, one straight blade and 2 notched blade fans in my garage all have flat rivet heads. Was there a difference in suppliers, plants or changes in design specifications at some point during the production period?

Late 65's started using the "Flat" rivit heads which continued through 66 and 67 aluminum blade fans.

Thank You W.E.
I'm still learning all the time about GTO's and Life. I have come up with a reasonable list (in build date order) showing when the "Round" rivit heads were used and when the "Flat" rivit heads were used on the Aluminum Cooling Fans. I don't know the reason for the switch in rivit design (turbulence, cost, labor) but it happened in late 1965. This list includes ALL Aluminum Fans. 1) 64 large straight blade 2) 65 large straight blade w/notch (air condition and optional) 3) 65 small with curved tip The sources I listed are GTO only. Some are still Original Owners, while others are second owners etc. but have never been restored. All 4 plants are included. 64 - Alum. Fans - Round Rivits 65 - PON, 09A - Round Rivits 65 - BAL, 11A 65 - BF, 12A 65 - BAL, 12E 65 - PON, 02B 65 - BF, 3A 65 - PON, 03B 65 - KAN, 03C 65 - BF, 5D - Flat Rivits 65 - PON, 06B 65 - PON, 06C All 66 and 67 Aluminum Cooling Fans (Large "Air Condition" and Small Curved Tip) used Flat Rivits.

60`s. From my list the only one that differs is the large car 1964 with flat rivets, 19 1/2in. I believe this is still the 9777013 GTO HD fan as the stampings of the hub are the same.....but more over the ink print 29 A.C. links the two even with one having round rivets...the other flat. 29 A.C. is Gran Prix with A/C and has a 2 3/16 pitch, and used on the GTO, Gran Prix and 421. Although I removed both from stock looking cars, one never can be sure that a collision replacement, or salvage replacement had been used. 50 years is a long time. I note that the 1966 MPC does list the 013 as a service item and probably still were being made. We know of no other fan that looks like the 013. However, laying a notched 65 with A/C next to it, they do look as if they might interchange.(the 64 has no notch). So maybe my large car 64 fan was replaced with a service unit 013 having flat rivets? Just no way of 100% knowing if my list and yours are correct representations or when the 013 got flat rivets. I am always collecting data on 64 A/C cars.

Early 65 notched cooling fan
I have this very nice Original early 65 cooling fan that would have come with air condition Tempest Series cars and/or GTO’s equipped with the high performance 3.90 gears in 1965.
Someone drilled an extra hole in the black painted hub (dang it). What I’m most curious about is the small “X” stamped into one blade? Was this stamp done for personal reasons, or is this a factory stamp? Maybe a few of you guys that have this “early notched fan with the round aluminum rivets” could take a look. It’s a rather small “X”, so look close especially if the fan is dirty. Thanks for the time, Chris

I wonder if you might try some lacquer thinner and clean up the extra hole. It could be factory balance and they would use a nice cutter unlike my wore out drill bits. I highly doubt that it is factory and have never seen this form of lightening a fan. Yes I have seen factory weight washers under the rivets. The rarity of the fan is also questionable. The notched fan is very much part of 65 but it shows up on the GTO and T/8 tempest with a/c. # 9779004. The hub is not so rare and switching the blades a possibility. The rivets used appear common round head but seem to resist rusting. Maybe stainless. At any rate, the hole would scare me and reminds me of early day racing when I sliced thru my hood with a run a way blade. I have a notched 65 that has no X on any blade but I am still soaking it and if I find an X will post Chris. By the way, with the blades removed you could really do a good job polishing them before reassembly as well as fresh hub paint.

Have a notched fan I am running on my 61 Ventura. Not sure of build date as it was an e-bay item I needed when I went to clutch fan. Has flat rivets, "H" stamp and "FRONT" stamp. No extra hole and no "X" stamp and no other stamping or balance rivets/washers.
