Clutch / Z bar alignment question 66 full size
Hi guys:
We're putting my car together and noticed that the z-bar is "crooked" or "cocked" towards the front of the car. This causes the clutch pedal push rod to be cocked into the z-bar arm crooked as well. Concerned about the bushing for the push rod will get worn way too quickly. Questions: Is the z-bar cocked on an angle towards the front of the car normal? Is that factory? Does the push rod lay into the z-bar on an angle like that? I have pics ... the one pic shows the z-bar cocked towards the front of the car ... the other pic shows the result for the push rod how it's in the z-bar arm cocked on an angle into the bushing. HELP!! Is this normal?

Z bar alignment
Phil I don't think it can be off like your pic shows, I know it's different on a '67 but the attached pic of mine shows it square with the engine. The engine colored bracket on mine may be your problem if it's shorter or longer that original, just a guess. Good to talk to you, the car looks great, hope you're doing good.

Hi Carey:
I'm using the original bracket from the car so I'm just not sure. I just spoke with a friend with a '66 4spd GP and he said that his z-bar is also cocked towards the front of the car. I'm going to go by after lunch and take some pictures of it as well. It is hard to tell from your pic if the z-bar is squared with the frame or is it on an angle cocked towards the front of the car. The only way to tell for sure is to take a pic from the top of the car. I'm going to look at my '70 GTO and just for kicks and giggles see how it lies in there ... I know it's different from a '66 full size but just to see. Thanks for the help and info!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

It has been awhile but didn't the '65 & '66 big cars have a special pivot ball on the engine end of the Z-bar. Seems I remember the ball was on a mount that bolted to the bell housing thus moving the pivot ball towards the rear of the car. The bracket on these had a habit of breaking between the mounting bolts and the ball so demand was high for these even back then. Anyone else recall this?

1966 GP Z Bar alignment
Hi Phil,
I check the Z bar on MY 1966 GP and it's looking just as yours is, but the rod lines up straight.

I found the bell crank ball bracket available at Restoration Performance Center with SKU # GBC2781. This bolts to the bell housing using the two bolt holes just forward of the hole then clutch fork goes through and the ball bolts to the other end. It is mounted with the ball facing forward. The ball will then be lined up with the frame bracket and the bell crank will be straight as it should be. I had this part years ago when I had a 4-speed conversion set-up for a '65 Grand Prix but sold it long ago. Even back then this bracket was hard to find but now they are available again.
