Am I reading this right? The car and engine are back together? Stories like this are the greatest. Thanks and please post some current pictures.

Right now car and engine are in the same hands, not yet married together,
Of course this engine was in the 70 pro car.

Don't know that it was ever in the 69 though it was a while before the 70s body style came out and some how my 69 does have a cut for quads hood, (a hood that also has the cut out in the frame for the IV pans) but anything more would be complete speculation.
The 69 never had a cage , or wider tubs or anything so this would have been a whole lot of engine for that car.

Doesn't mean I'm not gonna do it though lol. Doesn't take much for me to drop it in and enjoy it for a little while. Other than headers it's all pretty much the same as my IV set up.

Some say keep the IV In it and just keep the V with car what do you guys think?

I'll be doing some pics eventually once I start getting it all together how ever I end up doing it.

If you google Stephens Pontiac race car pics, some will likely pop up for now.
Gonna see what I can do about that RAV race car video from 71 as well.

I can probably post some pics of the car as I raced it with the IV in the 90s really soon.

i love everything about the car and the engine, but my question is, if the engine was never part of the car then why not build a car that matches what the engine was ran in originally. which is i assume the 70 firebird right???

Well we aren’t sure it wasn’t, that cut hood for dual quads came from something. And my car had a paint change (graphics ) which makes me think it went in into the 70 year (why would you change paint ona one year car) there’s a lot we don’t know yet,
I don’t think I’d want to build a clone I’d only want t build the original 70:thru 73 car ( there were variations on the same car).
Many others have out a V engine in a IV car since this came from the same place same dealer to me it’s all the same thing,

Long story short I don’t have a good reason .
That’s the best answer I have for you other than a whole lot of people want me to do it this way. Easy enough to swap it back if I find the 70 original body. It’s not that much different. And I have both hoods, plus Still have all my IV parts.

So this is the second hood, both cut the same for the RAIV pan, this one obviously cut for dual quads, why ? don’t know, RAV engine was early 70, did they test with it? Single 4 first then quads? Don’t know, don’t think they’d have raced it in pro stock no cage smaller flat topped wheel well, but we know the 70: cars came out pretty late . We know there was two color schemes which would be odd for one season. Besides that info don’t have much else, I’ll have to call Bill and start asking some questions. He said he didn’t remember a paint change on this car though.
( but here’s the pics ) Sometimes he’s gotta think a little on things though it’s been long time.
I do know Tom’s name ended up on the car as a driver with Bills it wasn’t there originally, . And he said he wasn’t there w the newer 70 car he worked in the body shop and also didn’t remember a paint change on the car but couldn’t rule it out. They also didn’t do the lettering a different guy did that work I think in forestville,, as well as the graphics done by yet another, that was done by woodys custom paint shop in new Britain. At Stephens - , Tom said things were changing around pretty fast in those days, said they were always tuning or doing something, washing them , waxing them, moving into and out of showroom, getting ready for races etc, with the cars.

Thanks. Enjoy those old reels. My buddy has some from US30 Dragstrip.
Unfortunately none of us are in them.
My brother was running high 10's in his 67 FB, and my father mid 11's in his 57 Super Chief those years.
I hung around all the big ones. Don Garllts and Jungle Pam etc whenever they where here.
They all let me go up to the starting line with them.

Best of luck with it.. what a piece of history you have going there. That video is pretty wild too showing the Stephens among the big names.

So I guess they never had a RAV single 4 according to bill it was always dual quads on it.
Just figured I’d update that info .

With the RAV engine in my 69 it sits 2.75 below the hood without the 2 inch spacers and the pan which was under the carbs being 1/8 aluminum.

Here a pic of it without the air cleaners on it. Runs sooooo good can’t believe how snappy this thing is throttle response wise .

I’ve driven it but it’s shot serious highway gear in it right now . Still pulls insanely hard Dint want to blow up my original 3.90 rear and I sold off all my other stuff so need to throw some. 3.90s and posi in one of my housings .

When it was in the pro car it was run with 5.13s

Thank you much appreciated .

While
I’d like to fully restore the car w the RAIV set up. I can be pretty damn happy with it W the RAV pro stock engine right where it is too.

When I find a good clean 70 body I’ll put the pro stock drive train in that and do it Up.

Sadly it’s looking more and more like the orginal body is gone .there’s always been rumors that the body was scrapped at a metal recycler local and talking w bill about how extensively the frame and front end were acid disposed he doesn’t think they’d have sold it to the public that way. So hard to say for sure but I have very detailed info from bill on how it was built and what was done to it so an accurate clone of it will be built eventually either way.
