2nd gen axle width
Hello,
Can anybody tell me what the width is from a 72 firebird 8.5 10 bolt axle from the OUTSIDE AXLE FLANGE to the other OUTSIDE AXLE FLANGE. We took the axle apart some time ago and we want to upgrade it with ford large bearings next week but i forgot to measurebit with the axles in. Thanks, Daan |

Most GM rears the axle flange is 2.81" past the brake backing plate flange.

Yep. Some GMs are 2.75(Wilwood has different kits for each). My second gen were 2.81 when I measured.
If you are welding on ends you can set total length whatever you want but you need to check your brake system and what it's specs are or they won't fit right be they drum or disc.

Daan I can go tomorrow to my storage and measure one but you really need to mock up the disc setup up also to see what distance they were made for. As I said Wilwood has two sets of kits depending on the distance.
Axles are I think 30 1/16-30 1/8" plus the width of the posi cross shaft- as they but against it- can get you there also.

From wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface, I have measured 61-1/2" on the 2nd gen F-body rears.

I'll get a measurement today but with the pumpkin hard to get a straight shot. Put the axles in the posi and measure might be a more accurate way.
