thanks alot for the info and web site.they were very helpfull.i will keep the info for future reference.maybe i ask the wrong question. i need a site that shows the axles and list of casting numbers used on the grand prixs.basicly there are no markings on my axle to identify what it is.all there is the casting marks on housig .no numbes on the axle tubes, nothing on the drums either.phs has the car as posi ,standard axle,no ratio given.the only numbers are on the ring gear.this gives me the ratio but nothing to indicate anthing else.axle shape is a 'p '.i quess i just want to see a list of axles and find mine on the list.the engine the tri power carbs the muncie are all trackable .ring gear numbers
41 12 gm 11 64 zn
maybe you or somone could identifythese numbers or rearasure what i think they mean hope this all makes sense to someone?remember this is for the 1965 year

41 12 means you have a 3.42 ratio. (41 divided by 12) I would guess that 11 64 could possibly mean it was cast in November of 64.

The center section casting for the '65 B body was p/n 9778080. I'm not a big car guy, but if the foundry did the same as they did for the '65 A body Differential Housing, the casting p/n will be on it somewhere.

The cast date will also be on it, same format as used for the block casting (ex. D85 would be April 8, 1965).

The 9778080 was also used in the '66 Differential Housing & Axle Tubes Assembly so the cast date will help "match" it to the car.

Beware, 5s & 6s can be hard to decipher in the date code so read carefully with good eyes and good light!

The p/n on the Differential Housing is NOT the same as the Assembly p/n in the MPC, Pontiac did not service the Differential Housing as a separate part only as part of the Assembly with the axle tubes pressed in and welded in place.

on the right hand axle tube about 10" or so from the end there is 2 letters about 3/16" high stamped on the tube. they are on the rear side of the tube. take a wire brush and clean the back side of the axle tube and you should find them.
