painting rally IIs
Looking for some help with a decision. I'm gonna paint a set of rally IIs for my firebird. Should I paint the rims black or gray with silver "spokes or paint them the matching body car color with silver spokes?

Grey with Silver spokes....did mine that way.....a lot of eye strain..taping off 4 wheels with fine line tape.

I had them painted to match the body before. But I'm repainting the car bright blue. Here's what they looked like in green

I think Pontiac did it right...with the grey and silver spoke.....the wheels had their own look....but that's just me.

Hard to beat the original colors of charcoal gray and silver.

instead of using 'fine line' tape and carefully masking the edges, .....spray the entire wheel silver, then once the silver dries, mask over the spokes completely (cover the edges of the spokes), and with an exacto knife, cut along the edges of the spokes and peel away the tape from the lug nut area. Then paint the grey.
IMO, body color Rally 2's don't look as good as the grey/silver Hope this makes sense |

I used the Ames pre-cut masking kit. (Page 266 in new catalogue) Masking kit cost $8 for mask only or $44 with correct color paints. Used kit to paint 5 Rally II's. Best way to go in my opinion.

This next photo demonstrates why you should not ignore the backside of the wheel. It should be a gloss light machine-gray. It DOES show.

Sounds like the charcoal gray and silver is the most popular. I'll look into the kit from Ames. I'll be using without trim rings. Drag strips don't like trim rings because of the possibility of them flying off. Or so I was told.

You are right Tempest about the charcoal. With the ones I did, I literally took two colors off the shelf at Wal-Mart using the 'looks about right to me' method. The next set I do will definitely be a paler shade of gray/charcoal and less metalflake.
They DID look good on my old T/A though!

I found some Honda 2 tone colors in my color book that are pretty close in color.....and 2 coats of clear over it....oh my !

I used the Duplicolor wheel paint on mine along with the blue tape method. After removing the old paint I primed the wheel with green etching primer followed by a couple light coats of grey primer sealer. Then I sprayed the silver and let them dry overnight. The next day I taped them off and sprayed the dark grey, I think they turned out pretty nice considering who did the job! Now, they are stacked up in my shop because I opted for the 17" rally IIs from Year One! The first picture shows the wheel before I started. Next three are etching primer, primer sealer and silver finish coat.

Here are the tape pictures and one of the finished wheel. When I taped the wheel off I applied pressure to the edges with the side of a Phillips screwdriver shaft.By rubbing the shaft against the edge the tape separated and I was able to peel the unwanted portion off easily.

Iam an old body man.....I just taped them off...like a set of flames ,or a two tone car or motorcycle tank....then went over the tape with my heat gun,to lock the tape down.....leave the razor blades for the kids.....lol
