non a/c heater box question
Starting cleaning up the inside of the heater box for my 68. It looked like there might have been some sort of seal on the main heat control flap door. There were some black foam bits I found inside, but its so denigrated there's no way to know where it was originally. Does it go on this door? Anybody know if there should be seals on any of the other doors inside the unit?
I'm guessing there isn't much out there for pictures?

Any idea if it completely covered the door, or just a 1" strip around the edge?
Did the other doors have seals too, or just the main one? Thanks!

Very helpful, thanks! Where did you get your seal? Ames does't seem to have them. I see inline tube has a kit, but it shows a lot more than just the door seal.

What do you suppose those black rubber bumpers are for? For the life of me I can't see the point in them. Unless they are doing something on the backside for noise or something?
Also didn't think my inside box used a seal to the firewall. wasn't it strip caulk like the outside box?

As long as I am asking more about a heater box than anyone should........
What finish where the mounting studs? I know they all ended up rusty, but should they be natural metal, painted black, or would a cad/zinc coated stud look ok? I could glass bead blast & satin clear them, paint them, or replace with something better........ ?

I presume the rubber is there to prevent rattling or vibrations on the door from making noise on the all-metal heater box. I got my seal kit from Ames, it included the entire kit for a non-AC setup to seal to the firewall. They don't sell just the single pieces, but it wasn't an expensive thing anyways. You can get some rubber and cut-to-fit yourself if you don't want to spend the bucks.
My studs were natural finish, I'm sure a zinc plated finish would look fine. I replaced mine because some idiot cut all of mine short so with no seals in place only 1/4" was sticking on the other side. Once I added brand new seals they weren't long enough anymore, so I drilled out the studs (1/4" bit, actually a GM procedure for Chevy cars) and put in 1/4-20 1.75" long screws in. It fit perfectly and you can't tell once it's all installed in the car. |
