Our host sells them but it says without grommet, however the picture shows a grommet on the cable.
I am going to call them tomorrow and find out.

No, Blue, but I bought the bracket and cable from them, because they were so very thorough and helpful on the phone. Nice folks. I will get the overdrive stuff form them when I get around to doing the overdrive tranny in the near future I hope.

Phil,
It shouldn't be very hard to make a metal retainer for that, if you don't have one. Take notice that the screw holes are not symmetrical around the perimeter.

I tried to get measurements but there is really nothing to use as a reference point. I measured back from the seam in the transmission HUMP 6 5/8" to the center of the hole. Then, with the doors closed( no door panels either) I measured in from the driver's door 29 7/16" to the center of the hole. It is 30 7/8" from the passenger side door to the center. So, if the trans hump is centered oin the car that means the hole should be offset to the driver's side about 3/4".

Fyrfftytr1, That sounds right as the hole sits left of center in the center tunnel hump.
I took a pic for Charles last fall and hole was off set to the left side of center.

Cammer,
The best measurement I can give you on the shifter bolts is 22 5/16" back from the same seam that I measured the hole from to the rear mounting holes. They should be in a flat area. When you position the shifter it will show you where to drill the front holes. They are on the curved part of the tunnel.
The shifter mounts on the center of the tunnel. the cable bracket on the front of the shifter is offset to the driver's side to line up with the hole.

OK thanks
Im thinking Ill have to cut the tunnel out of a column shift car to patch the 4 speed hole first.
Then I can position the shifter and cut the hole

I ordered a new cable from our host. It is is supposed to have the grommet like the one Old Goat pictured. I will let you know when I get it. I still have to make a retaining ring for it.
I may post in the parts wanted section to see if anyone out there has one.

wouldn't a grommet and ring work from a 70's f-body? It may not be exactly the same but it sure should be close. It won't be seen and they are a dime a dozen.

The ring may work but, I would like to get the dimensions on it first. I need one with a 2" inner hole. Outside diameter wouldn't have to be dead on but, something close to 3 1/4" would do.
Where are these rings available?

Head to the F-body parts for sale section and see who is parting something out or at least ask someone to measure it on a car that's stripped of it's interior.

Or post a want ad at the 70-81 F body parts wanted section.
Every automatic equipped Firebird had it.

I went by a metal fabrication shop today and talked to the owner about making the retaining ring. He said he would get me a price worked up. Is anybody else interested in one?
