There was a set of these on Ebay last year. NOS in original GM Boxes. Sold for over
$ 400.00. Another example of wierd parts getting crazy prices.
My car is getting a new top put on in 2 weeks. I am hoping my trim guy has something close to the original trim. Will keep you posted.

I would say that $400 was a good price for those, because that is what would be needed to make a reproduction.
If someone has a broken piece and wants to send it to me, I'll investigate the reproduction effort. Hopefully it can be done on a big roll and cut to fit.

Wonder if py, opg, Ames, etc, has any contacts, they could be used on all a body cars of these years.
I may be willing loan my set, so they can get whatever measurements & such, to make repros

Default vinyl top strips

hottrodd, my strips came out fairly easy after i figured out how to do them, there was no glue holding them in just pressure and the alunium drip rail keeping them in place, if i were to do it all over again i would make up a small wheel with a slight contour to press them into place, something like the tool you use to put a patch on a car tube. good luck, jd grim

Jd66, thanks, I was thinking the same thing, about making a tool. To press it down firmly& evenly

I'm getting ready to turn 42 this Friday, so I oviously wasn't around when my Gto was new, I'm the 2nd owner of the car, it was sold to me by the previous peers daughter, other than remember riding in it as a child, she is no help. Her dad died on the 1990's
It had been sitting in a garage since 1981 to when I got it in 2006. Someone had removed the original vinyl top when I got it, so I have no pics or info to go on about these strips. Except for the info I have gotten hear from
U guys.
In my research I have not been able to find any reference to these trims piece, or anything from Pontiac or gm, I assume they were installed in all gm A-body cars with vinyl tops???? You would think they would have printed info in how to remove or replace these strips????????

400 4spd, Im guessing ur piece is plastic?
I have been making calls to a few tool & die companys here in Indianapolis, & py
To see if it is feasible to make a die to reproduce the s.s. Trim pieces I have,
I do not have a plastic piece, I have connection in the plastic molding industry , if u would be willing to send it to me, there is a good chance I can have the plastic trim made in 55" to 57" strips that people would just have to trim to proper length.
You piece would have to be 1/2" up to 2" long, if so they should be able to make a exact copy any length . I would have to see how much a run would be. & how much would be made in minimum run. If I can get a good plastic piece I am80% sure I can get sone made.
The s.s piece will be harder for me, unless py,opg or Ames will want to make them.

It is plastic. I'm pretty sure I bagged a piece of it years ago in hopes of finding a replacement. I'll look for it this weekend. If I can find it, I will let you know.

I have a contact who does metal stamping and plastic work. In case you didn't know, a fellow board member and myself teamed up back in 2002 and did the clamp that holds the heater hose to the inner fender on 65-7 A/C cars. Then we did the 64-7 windshield washer hose clips and fasteners. Then we did the Hurst Wheel trim ring clips. If we are doing it, it is going to be exact! For now, just need a piece to determine what is going to be needed to extrude the proper cross section. metal and plastic. Understanding that this is going to be a limited demand item means we really have to sharpen our pencil on the production costs. We were going to do the little bullet clips that hold the a/c baffles onto the radiator support for 64-7, but the stamping required several passes and setups that it was cost prohibitive.

My friend who has the 67 LeMans (100% all original car) in his garage as I mentioned, his car has these "strips" in place as well. If I remember correctly, they are plastic, I could ask him if he would be willing to try and remove one to see if they could be replicated. Some of you may know this friend of mine as he and his partner used to restore 65-67 "A" body cars for many years up in the Syracuse, NY area and he has restored and parted out more cars from this era than anyone I know and he has never seen this before other than on this car he has now. I'll see if I can get some pics this weekend and post them...

From what I remember those strips kinda look like those inexpensive push on plastic door edge guards that you can buy at the auto parts stores...

Joe,
You are correct on their looks. I doubt your friend will remove one, after 45 years they are sure to break. Mine broke apart in '78, the sunlight weakened them quite a bit.

I could come up with an inch or two of the plastic version that's already broken off of mine. Just need an address to send it to.

If I could get a good piece as long as possible, from 1" to 3-4" that all the contour are still good on the piece (if they have contour, never seen a plastic trim piece), I can get it scanned , after that , the piece can be made in long rolls, the cut to the correct length. Should be able to add uv inhibators to prevent it from cracking.
