I put the down tube onto the lowest head bolt hole on the front face of the head. I just finished my 455 build with Edelbrock RPM round ports.

Looks like it's a go! Picked up the heads from the machinist and he found 2 intake valves slightly bent and 1 exhaust valve slightly bent. Just ordered everything else from butler. headers ,valves misc stuff. cant wait to get this back on the road! likely selling the old dougs headers to help offset the new ones. Plus i'll have a box to ship them in.

Don't assume that fully assembled eheads are ready to run. On mine, the stock valve job from Edelbrock on the exhaust side was .005" OOR which is a lot. The ports were pretty rough too.

Yup, and this goes for any new head you buy, even high dollar ones. They all don't seem to have perfectly round valve jobs and some of them won't even seal or hold a vacuum so I wonder if they are even testing some of them before they are shipped.

Anymore, new heads I buy go straight to the machine shop for a thorough going over checking springs, install height, valve job and valve guide clearances etc....In some cases changing/recutting the valve job if there is a more favorable one that shows gains on the flow bench. I typically pay for some flow bench testing as well because advertised numbers from many of these suppliers are often inflated.

Ok for my next question...currently my pushrods for the old 96 heads are 5/16x,083 8.750

i want to get the correct length adjustable pushrod checker to make sure my valve train geometry is correct.

its seems they come in 1 inch increments. has anyone gone from iron to aluminum and did you need a smaller or longer pushrod?

just trying to get an idea of the size i should be looking to get ( adjustable pushrod ).

crower lifters and crower roller rockers fwiw. the cam is this one

Thanks for the help everyone!

What where you doing with that length push rods when using a late model head like a 96 casting?

The stock length push rod for that set up is 9.145”.

The same guy that "ported " the 96's i sent you pics of set the valve train up like that. i have to say though the pattern on the valve stem was definably in the center.
