Default Shifter boot rubber

Ugh! I replaced the shifter boot about 7-8 years ago, I went to take the car out and the mice really did a number on my seatbelts. I never had a mouse problem before so I started looking for where they could have gotten in, bingo! The shifter boot had deteriorated so bad it basically fell apart in my hands. Now I could understand if the car sat outside and the UV got to it but that isn't the case here, I only drive it one or twice a year, garaged the whole time. Is it a vendor issue? I had a shifter boot for a 1970 that was like new, should I look for a NOS one?
