Shame that a Driver with his experience (granted likely not for years) did not
compensate for the passengers weight. He likely assumed the same turning speed as the old days, but he never had a passenger. Absolute shame to destroy such an importance piece of Drag Racing History. My all time favorite is the Stone Woods and Cook Willy's Sure hope nobody takes that for a joy ride to impress the Camera's |

He just screwed up, it would have rolled no matter if the passenger seat was empty. To quick of a steering maneuver with a high center of gravity.
First of all why are they using the paved infield of an oval track to do a wheelstanding exhibition when they're next to a dragstrip? The car was designed to be driven on a smooth dragstrip during an exhibition wheelstand, not over a rough infield. You see in the video the bumps in the infield asphalt, poor selection of a surface with little runoff area is part of the cause. The rest was driver error. |

Bob Riggle has raced replicas of the Hemi Under Glass for many years, he's not out of practice, just a driver error.

Bad deal, hate to see a priceless classic like that roll over.
I have not seen the car in person but looking at the video a couple time I see that it had no suspension in the back. Makes sense for doing wheelies. Most likely a spool in the rear making it hard to turn and the pizza cutter front tires. Oh and all the weight in the back with the motor. That would be a handful for anyone IMO. The camera was to close up to see why he was trying to turn going so fast but I assume he had a reason. |

Bad spot to do that stunt - not enough distance to slow down properly - Glad their okay

The car is only meant to be driven in a straight line. It is a purpose built tube chassis car with a high center of gravity and does not turn well or sharply at speed. |

One of the guys that used to work for me had a brother that bought this wheelstander from Randy Davis about 1979-80. The car was built by Randy in Erie Pa. around 1969 and originally had a corvair engine on it with an airplane prop on it. I never saw it run in that configuration. Later he converted it to a wheelstander with an injected 327 chevy mated to a 57-64 Pontiac differential through a home made transfer case. Tom Dorich bought it from Randy and tried to make a shakedown run at a 1/4 mile local dragstrip with it, and succeeded in rolling it over on the first pass. He lost his nerve and never ran it again that I'm aware of. I'm not sure where the car ended up, it wasn't hurt except for some cosmetic damage in the wreck. The car was called the Flyin Bathtub/Shower Power, had a fiberglass reproduced claw foot tub for a body with the bottom opened up for the driver to be able to see the strip. I had almost forgotten about this unusual wheelstander until this thread appeared about Hemi Under Glass. |

The Shower Power Flying Bathtub looks to be the product of Popular Mechanics inspirations of that era huh.

Mark, I have no idea where Randy Davis came up with the idea for an exhibition car with a bathtub body on it.
The only reason I even know about it was it was local to me, and I knew Tom Dorich the guy that bought it from Randy. |

It's a good reminder that, no matter how good you think you are, one dumb move will turn your car into a yard sale.

I was mad, smashing up a great car, hard to find unmolested, so many people used them to race

That car wrecked was not the/an original car. If you read the articles I show links to, there have been many Hemi Under Glass recreations and Bob Riggle built plenty of them. The car used the valiant/barracuda body, other than that it was a clone of the original cars.
Wild Bill Shrewsberry has the original 1965 car in storage in CA. Shrewsberry was also the original driver of the HUG debuted in 1965. After leaving his driving duties from the original car he constructed his own wheelstander, the LA Dart. Two of the pedigreed later model original cars were sold at auction within the last 1-2 years. |

Sheesh, I agree with others that posted WTF are they doing with these hair-raising wheelstands in the infield of this track with little room to shut 'er down
Need a good stretch of straight track for this kind of thing. Plus, why push it so hard that you have to swerve to avoid an obstacle after yanking the wheels sky high ? Somebody forget to conduct a safety meeting on this one

There were a lot of great wheel standers. Remember the Little Red Wagon? I also remember an Army Tank wheel stander! Happy 4th to everyone!
