spark plug reading
I had the engine dynoed mid june and its been sitting in my garage since. I saw a thread earlier about how you can read your plugs for detonation. These plugs are the same on the dyno and are 85 autolites. They dont have any idle time on them,he made the last pull, brought it down to a idle and shut it off. The intake still has the carb lift plate bolted to it and put duct tape over the exhaust ports. Garage is dry but has been a humid summer here. Thought I would pull a spark plug out of each side and take some pics. Im a little surprised of the amount of rust on them. The last 2 pulls were 50/50 93 octane and 110 octane.

Its hard to tell with the rust. I can't get over that. I'd address the humidity first.
Sorry but on a full throttle run I like seeing 2/3rd to a full turn of colour..you have that but the wrong type.

That rust definitely hid any signs toward the threads. Good thing you took time and pulled those out. Could that rust be some what of a sign the plugs were running rich and burnt clean? Would not expect to see them rust like that with some residual on them. Not sure there. IRC, clean = rich. No way to really tell anymore though with that rust.
Looking at the rest of the plug I don’t think I see any detonation. The brown residue on the ceramic part of the electrode shows that was hot and has residual stuck to it. Not overly so though. But I don’t see detonation signs there with the color of residual. I think I can see a light shadow of where the strap was burnt back on the break in, and it appears the strap was burnt back toward the threads more for the pulls. I would check that again if you back off on your fuel mix. Not easy to pick that out in the pics though. Going by the strap it looks like that plug is on the hot side. Your fuel mix appeared to work as far as I can see. Last edited by Jay S; 08-22-2019 at 07:49 AM. Reason: Edit |

I'd say change plugs. Those can't be used to tell anything?
Was the engine still hot when you taped it up? With all that condensation (probably from combustion) I wonder what the cylinders look like now? Also, what heads?

As soon as I saw the rust I figured it was going to be hard to read them. The engine had the carb lift plate installed about 45 minutes or so after the dyno session. i taped up the exhaust ports and took it home about a hour after the dyno was over. Heads are factory iron heads. Ive got alot of stuff in the garage that could easily rust from being exposed and doesnt abnormally . I think the humidity got stuck in there when I buttoned it up. If thats the case i should pull of the lift plate and see what the inside of the intake looks like.

Can you bore scope the cylinders? I'd suggest liberal application of fogging oil through the spark plug holes and turn it over. Hopefully the rings aren't stuck to the cyl walls. I pulled my 400 after a cam failure and let it sit in my shop for 4 years before I rebuilt it. The plugs weren't rusty looking, but the cylinders had pitting where the rings sat.

I took a shortish breaker bar last night and had no problem turning it over. Didnt feel stuck when first tried. Ive seen cheap bore camera you can get that now hook to your phone.

Bought endoscope,,,40.00 Amazon cheapie. Pulled the plugs and checked a couple through the spark plug hole. Didn't see the cylinder walls rusted any but did see some at the top of the cylinder but I can't tell if it's the chamfer in the top of the cylinder. You can see the multi layer head gasket. I did see scratches up and down one of the cylinders. Some light rust on some valve seats. Also took a pic from going down the intake and into a port. Surface rust on port wall. Afterwards I sprayed a fog mist of wd in the chamber and put the spark plugs back. Hopefully everything is ok...I'm not pulling it apart again. I didn't check every cylinder.

That's more rust than I'd be comfortable with. Do you live near the coast? A fogging oil will have much better corrosion inhibition than WD40. Bag that engine up tight and throw in a tube sock full of cheap BBQ charcoal to absorb moisture. It'll last until you're ready for it.

Autotech flat top...2 valve relief. I bought a can of fogging oil but it came out of the can in more of a stream. I tried it. The wd seemed to mist better and create a fog in there. I do live near the coast but not right on it. I don't have a rust issue with things in my garage. I think some moisture got caught in there after the Dyno. Guess I should have fogged it on the Dyno. My car sits in the garage all winter without me starting it ,you would think if it was going to rust up in there it would. Maybe it has been. The engine was only dynoed 2 months ago.
