Default Suggested upgrades for a 91?

My son has a 91 Firebird 5 L with auto. Has 110K miles and all original. He would like to put in a new engine or do something to increase performance. Knowing this isnt a rare car (but his first) what recommendations do you guys have for upgrades? Keep in mind he'll be limited by $$ (maybe $1K-$2K at most) Would it be a lot of work to build a 350 and drop in or a hassle to change computer controlled devices (you can tell I dont know much about this). Would it be best to just have the 305 rebuilt? Looking for some options to consider.
Thanks!

Old post but here goes;

A lot of chebby engine bird guys will drop in a 350 as they do not cost more and then modify the programing, fuel pressure and injectors to compensate. Lots of info at third gen .org on this. It is TBI, right?

TBI setup with MAP sensors are not tolerant to much modification. Cheaper to go carburetor, with a pressure regulator right off the stock fuel lines and a switch to HEI. I have done this and it works fine with the in-tank fuel pump. And it won't matter: 305, 350, 383, whatever.

Will upload pix next week if I think of it.

For a Firebird you'd need a low-profile intake manifold like a Wieand Street Warrior.

I'll have to check out 3gen site.
Yes, it's a TBI.
I wouldnt have a problem switching over to with a carbureted engine but worried about passing emmissions not having stock equipment installed.
A 350 would be a nice upgrade from the 305.
Thanks for the replies

Vortec 350 truck longblock and special TBI intake for the heads will be nice with that. Maybe a bigger TB from a 454 truck or aftermarket.
Also checkout Dyno Dons headers and a nice catback from most manufacturers..
