Default V8 Clutch Fork Spring Extension Rod

Does anyone with a V8 have the correct Clutch Fork Spring Extension Rod on their bird? It is part number 9785884 and is number 11 in the attached image. Can't find the correct one and thought if I could get the correct length, I could make one from the 6cyl that is common available.

The parts guide shows spring 18 and extension rod 11 needed. I found a NOS Spring part number 3899021.

OK. See if this helps you. I thought maybe making one out of a nail. Mine is almost worn through, so I thought of making a spare.

Wow Thanks, you are the first person that I have seen to have that part. Sure is tiny. Looks to be right at 1.75-17/8?

I found a Straight extension rod from a nova but after seeing yours it is way to long. I will make one from it.

Someone else earlier was asking about it and I sent them pics. The pics never got posted. I had the trans out, resealed and replaced the syncro hubs, replacing the clutch and got some pics. The arm (17) that attaches the spring to the frame on mine is bent, I wonder if my spring is the wrong one and too strong. I thought about welding a gusset and making it stronger.

It's been a little hard finding a good spring. The repop ones seem sort of weak. The Correct spring is a 3899021 part number. The one Ames Sales is not even close and it is weak. OER looks more like the original. Here is a link to it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/3899021-OER-...dW8kWh&vxp=mtr

Here is a GM NOS http://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/s...return-spring/

Here is Ames https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...A&web_access=Y

I decided to get the GM spring hoping the tension is correct. So I thought I would make the extension rod to try to get it correct.

Good. Yeah HBC is crazy prices. I will get the OER since I dont know if mine is too stiff and bending the bracket. NPD is 5 miles away. They have one Part# C-4013-1A says 3 3/4" long. Is that your length too?

Ted,

Yes that was me that you sent the pictures to. I got called out of town for work on my endless road mission and never got to posting the pictures. That said, I'm now thinking the best way to do this is to purchase one of the 6 cylinder or Chevy clutch springs and just cut off the end to make it shorter, then form the "C" on the other end.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing the material would be of the correct thickness and you would be halfway done to start with. They are pretty cheap anyway. Check out this link on ebay for the Chevy version

That is what I'm going to do. I got a wire bender tool to help make it look better as I bend it. I be doing mine this weekend. I'll post my results.

I'll post the length when I get it. Should be in a couple days.

Thanks

Thanks Ted, those pictures are helpful. It is indeed a short extension, much shorter than the 6cyl. extension. Looking at the exploded diagram, it would appear the V8 extension is supposed to be about the same length as the spring itself. But according to your pictures, the V8 extension is only about half the length of the spring itself. Interesting.

Its not long, thats for sure. Those pics in the parts book, sure are not to scale. I imagine if it was missing, a substitute could be easily made. I never thought of it being so special before. Seems like SOME of the restoration stores show a 6 Cylinder rod and calling it for V8. If you need better pics, I can for sure take it off and take more.

I got the wire bender in and the straight Nova extension rod in today. I was able to make 4 pcs from the straight rod. I think I got the shape real close to Teds. Fit works great too. I think these will work good. Waiting on a new spring still to see how the final fit is.

Pretty close. The curve is more like around a 5/16" bolt. But those will certainly work.

Used a 5/32 wire bender on this example. Looks a little closer but still not exact.

I ran out of the nova piece so this was from a large spring that has a long straight piece. Very stout and will not give.

The first set was from the nova piece. It worked fine but this last try,I was tring to make it look more like it the original. I'll spray a little phosphate paint and it will look pretty good.

Yes, good enough. The curve really does look like a the top of a question mark, ?Maybe you can make a few dozen and sell them to AMES. They dont list one.

The bottom left looks the best as far as the shape of the hook.
