Thanks
Greg

Iron or aluminum ? The iron heads need a little larger box because the way to do it is you get a large piece of cardboard, cut it to the width of your head and roll the head a few times so it fits your box good. Make rectangle ends, 2- 3+ layers and a bunch of duct tape. Lots of tape.
Its a pain but they are heavy and you don't want damage.

I've had to get a box that was close to the right size and cut it, re-fold the flaps and tape it up. Don't forget to insulate with something. Styrofoam insulation works. But pack the head tight in the box.

Find a large cardboard box .roll up the cylinder head with several layers and wrap it tight. Cut off any excess.

Put the head in a grocery bag or 2.(Plastic) set it in a box with at least a 1 inch foam piece under it.Then fill around the head with a can of blow foam.Close the box lid. Get a box that leaves an few inches around the head to give the foam room to expand. You can wrap an extra layer of cardboard around the box to toughen the whole thing up.Use a buch of tape.

I had to ship some Ram Air 2 heads I had and bought some plastic tool boxes they would fit in. Wrapped the heads in shrink wrap and used spray foam to insulate them. Wrapped tool boxes in gorilla tape. Very secure. Cost about $50 in material

All good advice. I did what ta man said. At the ends I cut a wood block to fit the opening and drilled a hole in it for a finger grip then stapled all around.

I used the advice of Dave Bisschop. Wrapped properly they are the parcels that will wreak damage on the other parcels and stay secure in their own wrapping in the event of inproper handling or accident.

I made nice plywood boxes and shipped my iron heads to SD Performance. They came back rolled in several layers of cardboad. No damage whatsoever.

For a start you can visit / call local machine shops that build motors as many times they have boxes sitting around from customers new heads that they will give away instead of filling up there cardboard dumpster.

I made two crates out of old pallet wood, one head per crate. A PITA, but worked great and no damage. Customer was happy.

I tried this when shipping a turbo and found that commonly available expanding foam in a can won't dry without contact with air.

you have to get a special kind (anaerobic) and it's quite a bit more expensive, otherwise the foam dries unevenly and leaves pockets of liquid. That was a mess.

A guy on another forum used the expanding household spray foam inside the A and B pillars and rockers on a classic Packard. The stuff turned out to be acidic, and caused the entire body to rust out. Car was destroyed. Do your research before you spray.
