I was just looking through my 67 Pontiac Service manual and came across a section on "Superlift" shocks. This was an option from the factory. Page 4-5.
These are air shocks ...from the factory
What up with that?? I thought that the shock mounts were'nt made to support this type of load?

Anyway...I have gone to the airbags in the springs set up. I'm happy with that. I like the firmer ride and it functions kind of like an antisway bar.

Thought I would through this out there...stiring the pot...
Anyone else aware of this factory option?

it was an option usually ordered with a trailering pkg.

the problem with air shocks is that instead of only using them to lift the rear when the car's loaded, people use them to jack the rear up and leave it there for whatever reason.

this stresses the shock mounts, which in time will give you a couple of large drain holes in the trunk floor.

the hell of it is,at least for as long as i can remember, air shocks cost more than most springs and are almost the same amount of labor, if not more, to install.

it actually cost less to do the job right but people still used a ton of airshocks to clear tires.

i've never seen a set of springs melt a line in two and ruin a set of tires either.
