What engine oil are you running?
Hi All,
Just a question. What engine oil is everyone running and what viscosity? My '73 with the 350 motor has started leaking oil at the rear main seal and someone suggested running a thicker oil to see if it takes up. Your thoughts? |

Forget it,use the oil your engine needs. You might slow it down a touch but you wont stop it.tom

10W30 and my hot idle oil pressure on all my Pontiacs is 25-30 psi.
Replace the seal.

I run 10w-30 as well, and add a small bottle of Zinc. Usually my oil is synthetic, but The miles I put on are low.

The rear main seal in my ‘71 got so bad that anytime I drove it I’d leave a 2” diameter oil puddle at a parking spot as well as lightly lubricating my floor pan. I broke down and rebuilt my never apart ‘71 455 HO about 10 years ago primarily because of the rear main seal. Ever since the break in I’ve run Mobil 1 15w-50. It been great, almost zero oil consumption. And I replaced the rear seal with a BOP neoprene seal.
