1969 Ram Air III from an orange/white convertible
In the Las Vegas Craigslist I came across a guy selling a RA 400 he claims came out of his friends 69 orange / white convertible for 3000. Sorry I don't have the link. Its not mine and I don't know the guy, but thought a 69 ra vert is one 350 or so. So if anyone knows of a non original engine 69 RA vert orange /white car then the original engine might be there.

ive had numerous 69 ra3 judges and they all seemed to be drilled and tapped for 4 bolt but only had the 2 bolt caps. all of the 69 ra3 firebirds (including ta) that I have had only had the 2 bolt (not even drilled and tapped).

North I think that you meant 1970 went 4 bolt? All 1970 400 blocks were drilled and tapped for 4 bolt mains. In 1969 the RAIV 400's were 4 bolt and the exteremely late blocks, like in mid to late October and later built 69 T/A's. Many of them had 70 blocks that were obviously drilled and tapped as well.

Very rarely do you see a 69 400 block that’s drilled for four bolt caps including judges and Trans Ams ,even the ones that are dated late in the year ( June- July and later . I’ve had and checked out so many of these blocks I can’t even begin to count And I have several now that I could show you.

I typoed, I meant to say that 69 400’s were all 2 bolt mains except RA IV’s but in 70 all RA 3 blocks and even the base 400 4bbl with manual trans went to 4 bolt mains.
Drilled or not drilled is a separate thing, I’ve even seen 400 2 bbl engines drilled for 4 bolt mains.

I agree that 4 bolt main caps are required to consider a block a 4 bolt main block. I also acknowledge that most 69 400 blocks were NOT drilled or tapped for 4 bolt main caps. BUT, I have seen several late 69 400 RA III blocks, F or June and later (mainly 914 cast blocks) that were drilled and/or tapped for 4 Bolt mains. Pictured here is an April of 69 YZ Anomoly block that is factory drilled but not tapped. I have more photos of other blocks but will have to do some serious digging to find them. Never say never! Most of the 914 blocks in late 69 RAM AIR cars (A & F body) that I have seen, were indeed drilled and/or tapped for 4 bolt main caps. I should also state that the only block codes that I have paid attention to were the RAIII WS, WQ, YZ and YW. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Uncle Judge; 12-19-2018 at 01:38 AM. |

I have never payed any attention to how a block was drilled, just if it had 4 bolt caps.Just because it was drilled did not lead me to buy one over another that was not drilled.JMO,Tom

heres a good example. 69 ra3 4 speed WS code dated D259. it is drilled and tapped for 4 bolt but only had the 2 bolt caps. I have and had numerous YS and WT code 69 engines just like this. so its not just a 69 ra3 thing. it is an A body thing the best I can tell because I have never had a 69 firebird ra3 or standard 400 that was drilled and tapped for the 4 bolt.

The only 1969 400s we've ever seen that actually had 4-bolt caps were RAIVs.
Four different 1969 'WS" engines/blocks have passed thru here in the past ten years and EVERY ONE had all four HOLES but only two-bolt CAPS.
Same as Gary's pic above. Five 1970 'WS' blocks during the same period, including one that's here now. ALL had four holes AND four-bolt caps. Of course, we all know that there are ZERO absolutes when it comes to how Pontiac did things...... |
