Default Third Gen weight

I'm looking at a nice '87 305 HO 5 speed Trans Am. Air etc, the usual. Can some one give me a close total weight on these cars in stock form? Just curious about how much the weigh. Thanks everyone.

I have the factory build sheet for my '84 Trans Am. Its a pretty typical optioned car with A/C, automatic trans, power windows and locks, T-Tops, and a few other minor options. The shipping weight was 3,424 lbs.

Thank you Sir. That is just what I needed. I'm trying to get a handle on their weight.
Sorry but I should have asked right away but, does anyone know a typical weight distribution, front to rear bias?

I'm looking at an '87 Trans Am with the 305 and 5 speed (air etc, the usual) . So I should assume that 3400 to 3500 is pretty much what to expect. Thanks for your helps guys.

Yeah, a T/A will weigh a tad more than a formula because of ground FX.

The shipping weight is not close to what the cars really weigh. Your car will be closer to 3800 lbs then the 3400 lbs. Shipping weight is with everythng dry so GM & other mgf's can get abreak on th amount they pay for shipping from the plant to the dealer. Most all those era cars are in the 3800-3900 lbs range. To be 100% sure find a scale at a local wrecking yard or a place that take scrap metal, you'll be suprised at how much the car really weighs when you get there. Also forgot the weight bais ins't to bad there about 60/40 with the front being heavy. With the engine being set back into the cowl area some makes them much better then the older birds.

Me too... but findin a good one aint so easy... Actually the late 80's to 90 front aint bad... and if your good with the cover repair stuff you can close off the opening below the headlights and really improve the look... headlights will still raise enough to clear and directionals would need relocating... something I may resort to if I cant find a decent 91/92 nose.

3300 to 3500 lbs sounds about right btw... recall test reports lamenting 4-600 lbs heavier than the Mustangs... My Dads 85 hatchback was right above 3000 and my brothers notch was under 2900

Your saying you had a mustang that wieghed 3000 lbs & one at 2900 lbs!!!! wow you must have had the lightest mustang ever built. dry weight on all the fox body mustangs even with the 4 cly weighted a min. of 3300 lbs thats was why the ford guys liked them because they were so close to the 3000 lbs mark so they could get them down a bit. The weight your talking about is less then what ford EVER built them. I think you need to look at those weights again.

I'd like to see the weight ticket on that car. I don't believe you. Base weight on the 4 cyl. 4 spd. is 3050 direct from ford & when you add 600 lbs for options that makes it right about 3650-3700 with options.

I owned and raced several Fox body Mustangs including a completely stock 1988 GT which weighed exactly 3400# with me in it at 250#. My 1993 Cobra R was just at 3000 with me in it, it has some things to reduce weight but had a full roll cage but it was all steel with the bumper reinforcements, all stock glass, full stock interior, the car was built identically to my brothers 3rd Gen Firebird which was just under 3400 with driver. His car has a Pontiac V-8 w aluminum heads, mine had a 302 Ford w iron heads which is probably 200 pounds difference. So I would say apples to oranges the 3rd gen F body is 200# heavier.
I have also personally weighed probably over 1000 cars on good scales.

All the options don't weigh anything near 600#, the complete AC/heater system weighs 75# total, the only other options are windows and locks, radio, rear defrost and sunroof which are all less than 50#
