Default ALUMINUM HOOD T/A'S

anyone know for sure why some of the cars received the aluminum hoods vs. the steel ones?

Nobody's pinned it down yet but my guess is some of the early 80's SE's with the cross fire injection got them. If you have one I want it!

What was somewhat determined over on thirdgen.org is that mainly early production '82 T/As got them and installation was sporadic at best. The 6/82 built LU5/WS6 Trans Am I used to own and my current 4/82 built Y84/LU5/WS6 Recaro T/A have steel hoods.

Every '82-83 LU5 Crossfire Trans Am I've looked at has had the aluminum front impact bar.

Not all of them - only the ones with the competition package.

The hoods were a option and its in the parts books/dealer brochure. They use different hood struts, and hood popup spring.
I had 3 of them at one time, they are 21-22lbs
The hoods have 82 date stamp in the bottom, and use the steel hood part number.
If you score one NIB (good luck) it will have the correct aluminum hood part number on the box.
Some hoods have a 2" or so "A" on the bottom pass side of the hood latch. (mine is one of the few that didn't get the "A")
Current pricing is anywhere from 1,500-10,000k (NOS NIB) If you find one cheaper, BUY IT !
And yes the 91-2 comp package Hawks got a aluminum hood. (I'm building a nuts and bolts correct one now)
No, I won't sell mine.
