Default Formula Air Cleaner 71 or newer

Looking for a decent 71 or newer standard dual snorkle Formula air cleaner. GTO or Lemans unit would work as well. Thx.

If it's the non Ram Air single heat riser one you are looking for I'm sure I have one.

I am not exactly sure, but I believe for 71 and up they had the single heat riser...

I have long heard that '70 only got a single snorkle, but I can tell you with out ad oubt thatthis is BS;
The legit '70 (non-CA) aircleaners can be had in either single or dual snorkle configuration, but do not have a carburetor (front) fuel bowl vent tube hole.

It's worth noting, that the '70-72 Formula (standard) 4bbl air cleaner differs from the '68-72 GTO units in that they employ a dropped base - becuase the GTO had more underhood clearance;
The GTO air cleaner will work, but it will rub against the underside of the hood and rub through the mesh which seperated the top oand bottom layers of the Formula hood - trust me, I would know.

The heat riser deal is kind of muddy too;
I believe that the dual heat riser air cleaners were intended for non-Ram Air 455HO Formulas (aluminum intake engines used a dual heat riser setup), but I believe that most if not all service replacement air cleaners had the dual heat riser setup;
Add to this, that for '72 the 455HO option on the Formula model included the 'Ram Air hood inlet' option - which was an extra charge item for 1971 ~ I suspect that it was a hit and miss for '72 model year cars if hte single or dual heat riser air cleaner was installed at the factory.

I personally aqquired a (still date stamped) '70 Formula single heat riser, dual snorkle air cleaner some years back for my car.

Still looking....need a 70-72 dual snorkle air cleaner from a Firebird. GTO/Lemans will not fit.

Do you know that they're reprodced?

They are reproduced as Trans Am air cleaner bases, but hte only difference between a Trans Am air cleaner base, and the non-Ram Air Forumla air clearner is the presence (or absence) of the shaker mounting tabs ~ they are the exact same thing.

I believe that the parts place makes them, but I also think that our host PY sells them ~ if not, I'd advocate supporting another Pontiac specific vendor like Ames...

It took me about seven years to locate mine.

Just trying to help

unruhjonny -
Thanks for the info.

Anyone have pictures showing the difference between the Formula and GTO air cleaners?

Still looking by the way...

The two major differences are 1. the amount the air cleaner drops around the carb & 2. the indent required on the bird one to clear the distributor. The bird pan drops lower on the carb.

A-Body - less drop, no indent at rear.

F-Body - more drop around carb, indent to clear distributor.

Don't get confused by the different arms on the air cleaner - I'm just using a Ram Air air cleaner for illustration because I couldn't find a regular dual snorkel one on e-bay.

I still have this one that I sent you pics of before.
Been thinking of adding a second heat pipe ~ shaker clips & using it for a TA..... I was hoping a Formula guy could use it as is before I modify it.

Steve's air cleaner is actually a 71 or 72 since it has the hole for the carb air horn. My 70 air cleaner doesn't have the hole.
