You've maybe already done this, but run the engine for a little while with the radiator cap off to see if coolant is circulating normally.

Are both the same brand? Maybe you want to change brands? Stant perhaps?

Throw them in a pot of water and put it on the kitchen stove, along with a cooking thermometer, to see if they open at the correct temperature.

If they are the same brand ... could have been a bad batch, or a bad design.
Yeah ... I'd be curious enough to test one of them. Could be they made a batch with a sticky valve ... or bad paraffin cans. If they are different brands ... yes, it would very strange to have two bad ones in a row .... (assuming they aren't the same manufacturer with different labels). |

I only use the stant super stats, the spring type, they seem to respond the best and flow great.
It sounds like bad stats to me. I would rule that out before anything else. Yes, on having X number of them bad in a row. Have you retorqued the heads after initial fire up? What kind of head gaskets? .

You know ... this thread reminds me .... on final sorting before startup ... it's probably a good idea to pre-test any t-stat I plan on installing ... might save having to pull it apart and change it later.

We've had three out of four bad ones - and that was different manufacturers being tried. One that finally worked was the cheapest. Go figure.

Whatever you do, test the unit on the stove before it goes in the car!

super stat
The Super stat is a quality piece. mine opened at 177ish and wide open by 187ish. Heck on days below 70 my car runs down the road just below 180. Only on hotter days does she run at 185max. Gerry
