'78 4spd Fisher T-Top Trans Ams - How rare are they?
I'm not as familiar with the later second gen cars, and have a question regarding the rarity of Fisher T-Top Trans Ams. I know there were only 20 4spd SE TA's.
My question is, how many (non SE) '78 4spd TA's had Fisher T-Tops? Were the Fisher T-Top cars all from Van Nuys or did Norwood cars get Fisher tops also? Would a black WS6, W72 Fisher T-top TA car have any inherint value over a Hurst T-Top car equally optioned? Thanks in advance for the insights. Greg

I would say that a 78 with Fisher tops would be MORE common than a 78 with Hurst tops, but in 78 T-tops were still relatively "uncommon".
Obviously,ALL Y88's had them as did limited # of Y84's built at the Van Nuys plant. I'm on the WEST side of the country & the majority of the 78's I see are Van Nuys build. I don't believe that T-top production figures have been broken out. I would also wager a guess that a 78 T/A with documented T-tops from either factory/style would have the same value. It seems to be a matter of personal preferrence. In 1979,T-tops (Fisher) became more widely available/common. |

There are no known production information that I have found as to how many 1978 4-speed Trans Ams had Fisher T-Tops. Based on copies of Pontiac production numbers I can share with you there were 27,419 Firebirds produced with Fisher hatch roof.
As far as 1978 W72 4-speed Trans Am production, Pontiac produced 12,692 of them and another 810 Formulas. W72 production peaked during the 1978 model year with a total of 34,886 Trans Am and Formula Firebirds produced. The 20 cars you are refering to is Y84 (fisher t-top) black and gold SE W72 and 4-speed transmission. Hurst hatch roof production was limited to Norwood OH assembly only.

2manyT/As and Mr.W72, thank you both for your information.
Mr.W72, the W72 4spd production for '78 seems high. Here's a link that indicates 4112 not including the SE's: http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/1978ta.html If you have a link to the production numbers, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again for the info!

My production numbers come from copies of Pontiac production records. I can assure you the 4,112 4-speed number and 4139 automatic number are either incomplete or entirely wrong. For accurate information on W72 Firebirds you might check out my page located at www.78ta.com/w72.htm I have spent many years researching and collecting Pontiac data. In Addition to production numbers, my large data base also includes an original 1977 Pontiac Engineering Engine Assembly guide which includes the W72 engine specs. This book once belonged to Mike Hicks who was an engineer for Pontiac Motor Division.

John, that's a great site. There is a lot of comprehensive material on these cars, especially the W72 .pdf summary. Congratulations!
I can see from your production numbers section where you derived the W72 totals. Thanks for answering my question on the W72's.
