Default Too much play in rear

I've been searching for a bop 8.2 rear for my firebird for some time now. I picked up one today with multi leaf perchs and XE code. It's non posi. It may be several weeks before I can pull the cover so I have a question. Is this too much play in the rear? I held the pinion and other axle in place so they would not move the turned the axle till it stopped to see how much play was present. Is this too much? The lug nut was used as a reference. Thanks

I have an 8.2 on the floor that i replaced with a 12 bolt. It has only 1/4 inch of movement measuring the same way you did. Its also a non posi and has all good gears inside. Hope this helps.

Not worth 1 penny if it blows up on you, seems like a lot of play

that's an obscene amt of backlash.

Out of curiosity, what ratio is this Firebird rear?

According to the code (XE) on the tube it was originally a 3.08 ratio. I paid $80 for the rear. I will likely rebuild it before installing it in the car. My bird currently has a chevy 8.2 with a 2.78 ratio that I want to change out.

Default Rear end play

There is no specs for checking play this way. You are checking pinion to ring gear, axle spline to carrier side gear, pin to carrier, pin to carrier pinion gears, and side gear to carrier pinion clearances. This way is the total of all these so just pull the cover and inspect. Good Luck

Just an update. In asking around for someone to rebuild the rear I found another diff. It's also out of a 68 and has a 3.23 ratio. I've pulled the cover on the newer one and it looks good.

I pulled the original rear apart. Looks like the retaining shaft for the spider gears has had it. When I placed the gears over somewhat intact piece of the shaft they wobble. No slack or play between the ring and pinion when turned by hand. Any one have a source for spider gears and retaining shaft?

For the sake of discussion and my own edification, is damage like that to the spider gear cross shaft the cause of the problem, or is it a symptom of something else having gone wrong further upstream? I don't hear much about cross shafts being damaged like that.

I agree with the German - I would be looking here:

Good question. I don't know...this is the first time I've tried to repair one myself. I don't see damage anywhere else but I'm open to ideas.

Just for the record, the open rear cross pin takes a beating during a one wheel burnout. I have seen dozens of 8.2 rears go boom when the spider gears weld themselves to the cross pin during a 6K burnout. Instant boat anchor.
