71 GP pitman arm same or different than GM A-body?
I was replacing the steering gear in my 71 GP today when I noticed that the pitman arm looked different than my 71 Lemans. I pulled off the Lemans pitman arm to get a closer look and I have them both in the picture, the GP arm is the one attached to the steering box and its quite different than the one I am holding up there, which is my Lemans pitman arm.
My GP may have an incorrect pitman arm, any thoughts? thanks, Jeremy |

Yes, A-body is different than GP.
'71 GP pitman arm is same as '70-72 GP. '71-72 A-body pitman arms have slightly different casting than previous A-body's w PS.

OK thanks for the info.
So a follow-up question, are the idler arms different from GP to A-body? Seems they may be, as the GP pitman arm is longer than the Lemans, so it makes sense that the Idler arm would be longer too. I can't really trust Rockauto or the other online catalogs as they all show the Pitman and Idler arm as the same part # for GP and A-body cars in 1971. '69-72 GP has is own idler arm, not the same as others.

Thank you. And I believe you are correct because the GP Pitman arm combined with the Lemans Idler arm puts the center link at a small angle. The center link is meant to be horizontal (to be specific, perpendicular to both the pitman arm and idler arm) so the tapered studs can rotate at the same height. The small height difference between the arms promotes a bind in the center link, I can feel it when installing it.
So where to buy a GP Idler arm? I just got off the phone with Ames and their interchange shows 64-72 A-body is SAME part as 69-72 GP. Maybe look for NOS? any ideas where to find that? thank you, Jeremy |

70-72 Monte Carlo, perhaps? Believe both the 69-72 Grand Prix and the 70-72 Monte Carlo were known as G bodies, by Fisher Body. They both had stretched frames, derived from the 68-72 A body. I have a bucket, of loose pitman arms, and I DID part a '70 GP years ago, so MAYBE I have the pitman from it.
