Default sub-frame bushings

Hello all,

This may seem like a dumb question but...I've been doing some refresh work on my 68 firebird. While underneath I noticed that the body/sub-frame bushing/mounts are all cracked and getting flattened out.

If I were to replace them, are there things I should be worried about such as body panels coming out of alignment?

One more question on this matter. Years ago I put in some hooker super-comp headers and they made contact with the floor. I had to apply some heat to them and bend them about a 1/4" to get the needed clearance. I'm now going with a new motor and a set of Doug's Headers. If I replace the body/sub-frame bushings, is there a chance that this would also improve the spacing between the floor and the headers?

Again, sorry if this is a stupid question. It just seems to me that if I add fresh bushings there could be a whole series of unexpected that might happen.

Thanks,

Usually body panels do not move as long as fender bolts are all tight. To do the core support-at least on my second gens I loosen those bolts and the next ones back and put the jack under the core support to move it up enough to slide the old ones out and new ones in.

I am guessing you will get a little more body lift with new bushings, especially with poly, which won't have as much squish as rubber

FWIW, I used the Moroso aluminum bushings decades ago in my second gen 73 T/A, Everything bolted up and never had to worry about the subframe shifting as the rubber compressed. I also had a 76 T/A with OEM bushings that was like a rubber band when you jacked it up.

If I was ever to own another subframe car it would have something besides the OEM bushings.

Great...thanks everyone. I'm going to jump in and do it. Figure with a new front suspension and shocks all around why not tighten up the body/frame while I'm at it.

Thanks!
