Not the Issue
Old school, new school, or middle school is not the issue here. It's about the CAR, not the freakin' wheels . Why have the eyes focus on two giant circles, when looking @ one of Detroit's finest designs.

Just because an opinion does not support giant wheels on a particular car does not make the person "Old School"... These giant wheels ruin the looks of a car and that is fact, not a matter of opinion. These wheels are called ghetto wheels for a reason, they are meant to stand out and show some form of "status" to the homies. They have nothing to do with complementing the looks of the car, and certainly don't help performance in any way with their considerable heft. These wheels are about bling, and that's it.
I like big, aftermarket wheels on cars if they are done right, but in my opinion, 18 is the absolute limit for any old musclecar. |

Bling wheels look like horsesh*t on old musclecars. Yo, pimp my ride.

As far as the large rim thing goes. If you can also see those same $4k per set rims on a $300 pos car in some of the seedier parts of your town, then they don't belong on your classic ride. And if Foose set the rules, all of our cars would sport two-tone paint jobs (with pin striping everywhere), 20" pimp rims with 1/4" side walled tires, 10,000 watt stereos and underpowered basic crate chebby 350's.

Well....the looks part can be subjective, not "fact" - I'll agree with you there (although I hate the look of them).
But the fact is that they are junk....low profile tyres make the car feel like its riding on solid tyres, you hit a pot hole or an object on the road and you risk grave damage to the expensive (ugly) rim and loss of the expensive low profile tyre. Personally, for driving in the real world I wouldn't use less than 60 profile tyres (50 if the tyre was a decent size like 295 etc). If I could find that magazine artist I used to see in Hot Rod mags that started doing illustrations back in the late 80's with these silly big diameter wheels that started this whole sorry trend then I'd nail his head to a table.....what a jerk.

17's, possibly 18's MAX on a 66-67 GTO. You could stretch it out to 20's, but you'll have to pay extreme attention to stance and ride height and wheel choice to get it to even remotely look not like complete and utter dog chit. For that reason, stick with 17's or 18's. Also, your choice in rim style is absolutely horrific. 6 spokes belong on trucks with 6 lugs. Stick with a 5 spoke of some kind.
Some Boyd Coddington Junk Yard Dogs would look good, as would Smoothie 2's, both in the classic series, as would the Two-Tone's in the Gotcha Series. Intro Wheels also offers a bunch of nice wheels that would look good on that car in their exposed series, like the Vista, V-Rod 5, and the Ram 5. Their Classic Wheel in the Endless Series would also look great and they are cheap. Poke around. Just ditch the ugly ass rims your considering now, trust me. OH!! as for the '66 LeMans in Livermore, it used to belong to some other guy before the current punk picked it up. It used to have the perfect stance riding around on 17" TT2's. It HAD a very healthy sounding 455 in it, not sure if its still in there as the car sounded kind of sickly the last time I saw it.

What makes that GTO above look good with 17's and 18's, is that the wheels still look "right" with the car. The Torq Thrust is a classic design, and larger sizes still complement the style and vintage of the car. Those multi-spoke wheels are horrendous, however. Stick with classics on a classic, and it'll work. And what was said about the risks of the zero-sidewall tires is not fiction- it is reality. Unless you live where there are literally no potholes or major road bumps, those low-profile tires are simply not functional. I read, I believe it was in either R&T or MT (but could have been MPH- can't remember exactly) the story of one of the editors, who wanted to upgrade the factory wheels on his car (a late model). He was thinking about 17's, but someone offered him an irresistable deal on some 18's. About two months after suffering the harsh ride, he blew out not one, but two of the tires, on a not particularly large pothole. When he went to get the tires replaced, they found that not only were those two rims bent, but even the ones with intact tires had been bent by hits of less severity than the one that claimed the other two tires/wheels. His final comment was that he should have known better, and that now he's stuck with several thousands of dollars of worthless, bent wheels. Unless you don't plan to drive the car, or only drive it on bowling alleys, seriously consider the functional realities and necessity of sufficient sidewall height. |

not to mention even modest low profiles...like what is stock on my wifes acura tl are VERY unforgiving with curb rash if your rim only comes within a few inches of a curb it will scratch. the bigger sidewalls take the hit with a "normal" tire size........
