Every time I'm searching for a tool I'm absolutely sure I purchased and sure I have, I find like two tools I'm absolutely sure I didn't purchase and I'm sure I don't have. But I never find the one I was looking for.
This time it was a needle adapter for a grease gun for piercing seals ... I know I bought one, cause I remember sticking myself with it. Never found it, but did find a brand new in the box impact type tool for freeing up frozen zerks, nice one too. Pretty sure someone snuck in my shop and hid that in my tool box.

I always put new tools in a place I can find them later, and somehow I can never find that place. But like you said, pretty neat what ya find when looking.

My problem is that I my shop burned to the ground several years ago. Every once in a while I will need a tool that I will start looking for only to realized it was lost in the fire.

As I was saying fixing 14 hp CC.i couldn't find the the head I looked for a week seemingly. On work bench in garage,in basement. So I started looking very carefully around tractor. I had a Hurst shifter and rods in a box. I picked that box up there was the head in a cardboard box below the shifter. I think the shop gremlins play games!

I came up with a theory years ago that if I'm looking for something and can't find it, start looking for something else. It never worked but it sounded good in theory.

You always find what you're looking for, AFTER you buy its replacement.

Those cleaning your garage memes always apply to me directly.
I cant tell you how often I say Im going to clean my garage, go out and spend about 10 minutes cleaning, then find something that Ive been missing for 6 months and play with it for an hour.

I'm always so sure when I put that new tool in a specific location, grouped with what seem like similar tools, for a similar purpose, that I have achieved Mr. Spock level logic with my organization. Then when I lose it/find it ... I'm always thinking why the heck would I put THAT tool in THAT location.

I don’t let myself leave my work area until everything is back in it’s place, the bench is wiped down and the floor is swept. I also keep my parts together in groups, for example on my current build I have an ignition parts box with the the distributor, upgrade diz parts, plug wires, and new plugs. Then there’s a carb/fuel box with the carb, fuel pump, an fittings, fuel filter etc. That being said I STILL can’t find SH*T! Now where’s my 7/16 end wrench…

Probably in the refrigerator where I left an item during a lunch break.

Just last week I bought a brand new set of nice metric deep impact sockets. First job using on my truck out in the driveway and the 10mm is missing. Wife and I looked everywhere ... I ended up buying a new 10mm socket. I know I used them to remove and reinstall the diff cover ... now magically gone. And on a neatness scale while working ... I'm probably a 6/10 .. so not a complete slob.

Have you ever had that nagging feeling as you sat something down somewhere that that's not where you usually put it? Just a momentary flash through your head.
Sure enough, later you can't find it because all you can really remember about it is that you put it somewhere that it shouldn't have been.

I have a vague memory of setting the socket on a frame rail (bed was off truck) .. it will probably be rattling around in the frame for the next few years. Or someone a few years from now will find a rusty 10mm impact socket on the side of the road.
Maybe I'll get lucky and hear it rattling around in the washing machine ![]()

I've been told that memory is a terrible thing to waste.... and lose.
I was looking for the blower tube on a Steele blower vac. Looked al over for it for 6 days couldn't find it. So I went out and ordered one. 3 pieces for $33.19. Got it and went to set it all up and had to go back in the basement for something else. Low and behold I found it under the edge of a table hidden behind a box. ![]() ![]() I just hope that someday I don't forget where I parked the GTO. ![]()

For 45 years I've been having bad dreams that I forgot where I parked the GTO, and another one where the brakes just barely work.

Reading glasses
At least 3 times a week And how many times have I left a battery-powered work light burning in the garage when I walk away? My wife checks the gas range every night because I leave it burning about as often as I turn it off. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. |
