I thought 71-72 was the change over years for tapered bearings, and there was a service bulletin for 70s and before to use tapered bearings as a replacement? I could be wrong there.

I think it's possible too that a casting date of April made its way on to a 71 car, since 71s probably started shipping in Aug/Sept.

.
I deleted my post because I thought I was wrong and seeing things in his axle shaft pic.

I did an archive search for 9799100 and saw a 1969 8.2 that DID have tapered bearings on the shaft.

Weird. Maybe OPH can straighten me out.

Sorry for the thread hijack.......

The 1970 radiator core support fit pretty well in the 71. Bolted right up! Will have to drill out the spot welds on the orginal core and remove the top. It will then weld onto the 70 Core...
Hopefully, it'll work like a charm!...
Dressed up the alternator with some chrome parts....

QA1 Motorsports coil over system is Oh-so-nice! Don Cross (Crossdog389) is to come over tomorrow and install the driver's side! Talk about a calk walk!! After installing both sides and getting the steering linkage on, I'll need to torque everything to spec..
With the wheels and tires on the car, we can then adjust the ride height of the front end by dialing in the springs and the ride will be controlled by the adjuster on the shock...

Had a GREAT day yesterday! While in the shop Don Cross, Stan Holderly, Clint Minglin, Kris Smith and Clark Gick stopped by to check out things at 306 Earl Street! Talk about old times!! When we would do this sort of thing back in the 60-70s, everyone would show up! Thanks guys!...
Brought to you by....QA1 Motorsports and the talents of Don Cross installing the passenger side setup!

I would say, "Great team effort" so far on our 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport. QA1 Motorsports, Summit Racing and Pirate Jacks Hot Rod...
Want some red calipers? Pirate Jack Hot Rod Restoration has what you need and will stand behind their product all the way! Thanks Guys...
Pirate Jack Hot Rod Restoration and their 4 wheel disc brake conversion. They also have Slotted and Drilled Directional rotors that look Sweet!...

Z4,
Thanks for looking at our thread! I have learned so much since starting this LeMans build....one thing that sticks in my mind is the importance of the GT-37. I found one the other day....might have to think about this one too....it's a 400 4 speed...with the hood pins installed....

That one of yours is "out of bounds cool"....keep us updated!

She is taking shape! There is QA1 and Pirate Jack peeking out from under her. Loving the look of the factory colors...
Just had to do this....I kind of like the look of the Rallys....Corvette 15x8... I like this look as well...I know, run the Rallys on one side and the Torque Thrust on the other side....

Your car is really coming along...but I can't recommend Chevy wheels on a Pontiac...it may have an identity crisis...lol

Need to be very careful and mark each bow and it's location and color...
Interior is now stripped to the bone!..
Found what is left of the build sheet....this car it was under the driver's side floor shield. Can only make out a couple of items...

Spent this afternoon at Chucks Engines checking on the Poncho 350..
She is looking great and for just wanting a tune up, it will now turn some heads for sure....
New slugs and the cam look impressive....280 duration/418 lift....

Should give her some thumpin' power....

Remarkable work on your car 71!
Did you purchase a 70 core support form our host to make that work for your 71?
My 71 is rusty below the battery tray at bolt area and may need to do that to my car.
Thanks.

West Coast,
Thanks for looking and your comments!
Yes I did buy a new core, but not from our host. This one fit right in and I will be adding the top from my old one.
I urge you to not throw away your old one. I am planning on repairing mine and put it up for sale. There are folks that want and only want original.....

2002,
I finally made it back to the shop yesterday.....just did not have the drive to get anything done!....
Removed the driver's side door in order to replace the hinge pins and bushings. Clark Gick came over to make some repairs on the interior. Getting close to getting the engine/trans home... STOKED AGAIN!!...

Kurt,
Are you going to use a spot weld drill bit to remove the top from the 70 support or another method?

?
