We got the car torn down yesterday. We'll be detailing the engine bay, painting the frame and other misc components. After we're done painting, the car will be going off to the body shop!

Nope, going black on black, with no vinyl top.

Got the frame degreased, sanded, and painted along with the firewall. The booster/master will be changed, and things like the tie rods, dust shields, and sway bar will be painted in a grey color.

Whats the difference between the two? I know the original mounts are still mounted to the other engine.

Here's two pics of the 455 I took out of the car. I was told it was a 70, but I think it's a 71 block. I thought I took a pic of the build date casting, but I don't see it. I'll grab it tomorrow.

Yes, the one in the car is a 71 455. The guy who was selling the car thought it was a 70, but it's a 71.

The 70 455 is in the corner of the garage.

The 455 mount plates on the frame are wider (picture below). Visually quite obvious compared to the smaller upside down triangle shaped 400 mounts.

They require the 455 engine mounts which bolt to the block with 3 bolts (instead of 2 bolts on 400's). I think it's about a 6" engine mount bolt versus 4" or so for the smaller engines. Stronger mount for the additional torque of the mighty 455's.

I'm curious what your build date is on that 71 block. I have a strong interest in early 71 castings.

Good to know, thanks for the info!

I'll grab a pic of the 71's build date today. I'm degreasing and painting it today.

Got the engine all degreased, power washed, and painted up! I grabbed some pics of the casting numbers on both engines. The blue engine is the one currently in the car, with the Chevy orange engine (yes, I know) being the supposed original.

From what I've gathered, the orange one is a late 69 build judging by the date code near the distributer (the car was a late 69 build). It's a YA code, casting number 9799140, which if I'm reading right comes back to a 1970 455 automatic GTO. The heads are 64's.

I cant read the VIN stamping. The top half of the numbers are missing. Is there any way to help get them back some, so I can read them?

What's the VIN of your car?

The engine VIN is hard to read, but it can be partially figured out.
If it's close to what the car is it could be the original?

To me it could be possibly 20P118511, the 20 would be for the 1970 model, The P is about the only thing that might match the partial stamp.
The 8 and 5 are kind of guesses, but think the date would be around the 8, the 5 looks a little different on the bottom.
The 1 and 1 on the end are probably the only thing to fit there?

It probably don't match the vehicle's VIN, as I pointed out the frame mounts are not 455 mounts. I think the partial VIN on engine is from a Oshawa vehicle.

That's probably correct because of the mounts.

And the 'P' being a '1' is very possible.

Quick question:

On a black Judge, sometimes the stripes look Yellow/Blue/Pink, but I've been reading that it's supposed to be Yellow/Red/Blue.

I really like the pink portion of the stripe, but I don't see any aftermarket companies that offer the stripe in the Yellow/Blue/Pink option. Where would one acquire such a stripe?

We're waiting around for parts, so little things are getting done. The radiator got stripped and polished for that 60's-70's custom look, the interior is gutted in preparation for paint and new covers. The top was removed, and it's not going back on. The coolest thing of the bunch is the new wing!

So, I'm assembling the accessory drive, and I've hit a speed bump.

I cant get the alternator and PS pump to line up with the pulley on the water pump. The two belts are on an angle, with the alternator leaning backwards slightly. I cant figure out what I need to change.
