68 Firebird 400 Steering Improvement Help
Looking to improve the steering on my 68 FB 400 convertible. Has anyone fitted a later steering box? If so, from what vehicle and what else needs to be replaced. Many thanks!

check the basics first. Is your rag joint new? If not they can make the steering feel very sloppy.
you can check for deflection with a helper. |

What improvements are you looking for? A faster ratio, a different 'feel'? I don't know if it has been done for F body cars, but a 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box is apparently a good upgrade for A body cars. Do a search in the suspension forum and you may be able to find more information.

There's been several responses to your original thread in the suspension section of the site. If you haven't taken a look at those I would recommend it. I have my thoughts there for you as well.

Thanks everyone. Looking for faster ratio and better road feel; however, I'll start by checking/changing the rag joint while I accumulate the parts for a complete change-out.

Chuck at www.powersteering.com can restore and update your original box to a fast ratio version. This will fix both your slop and ratio at the same time.

I did this upgrade in my car. Has very good steering response.

I put a late model T/A box in my 69 (I think it was a 1980) and it bolted right in. A 2.5 lock-to-lock works way better than the original IMO.

Best solution short of rack is the 600 Series Delphi* style box - GC box does not compare. Another fix is Savitske's SCII kit, fixes the woes of the first gen geometry very efficiently.
