Weeping IA freeze plug
While doing a convertor swap I noticed the rear driver's side freeze plug of the IA block was actually moist around the threads, the middle one slight surface rust on the block that could just be condensation rust.
I think the machine shop used the aviation shellac sealant on them and even puling the starter hard to get enough bite on the plug with a square driver to break it loose and reseal it. One of the ones on the passenger side after the dyno session in my garage started leaking in the square notch and I could get it out-had a casting defect. This looks like just leaking around thread sealant. Any radiator leak work and not plug the radiator passages or head passages? I think GM had to use some kind of pellets in the Northstar motors as they were leak prone.

Skip,I put in every engine I build when it goes in the car.They are round discs that look like compressed sawdust.If I find it I will post the link.Have bought them on ebay before.GM product.Tom

Skip, Bars Leaks, tablets or the pelletized liquid will. I've used it in customer cars as well as my own. When working at GM dealerships we used the GM part number tablets, which is made by Bars Leaks for GM.

Tom, no problem, the GM or the Bar's Leaks work just fine, I've used both and no worries about radiator or heater core plugging. Once the leak is sealed it will never leak later on.
Some of the other stop leaks aren't permanent, both the GM and Bar's Leaks are permanent.

I had the same thing happen to me on my IAII plug, same one. Through some copper Bars Leak in and problem solved.

Thanks guys! Jim if the motor ever comes out maybe have to switch. I know I did have to dimple a couple of header tubes for the IA vs the same headers on a stock block.

Are you talking about the plugs on the side of the block or the back of the block? I had one of the rear screw in NPT plugs leak, I use the Ali side ones with O-rings and they never leaked.

Side of the block. The main one is the back plug driver's side above starter.

The GM pellets are the solution to some of the Chevrolet LS engines. Some of the early 5.3's used the "706" head. Some of the heads leak coolant through the actual metal, because of porosity issues. I have heard many that have used the pellets (the pellets are just compressed metal powder. My 2005 C10 has the pellets in it, it does not leak, at all.
