I have recently unearthed a beautiful '69 Custom S with a documented 31k miles. It's an absolute time capsule, able such a fun car.

Three problem is, it's the terrible (my opinion) espresso brown color.

The body is very straight, asked the car is crazy original - but I'm not a fan of the color.

Has anyone here wrapped their Custom S? It wouldn't be anything that couldn't be undone should a future owner want go back to brown, and might actually protect the existing paint. Plus, it would likely be MUCH cheaper than a repaint, wouldn't you think?

Anyone with experience here?

Yep. That's what I'm considering!

That car came out nice, especially for just a few hundred bucks.

The paint on my car is particularly poor. It's dated, scuffed and scratched - and it survived a structure fire at one point, so there's a healthy imprint of a tarp across the roof and rear decklid. A wrap could be a very affordable option for me.

Yeah, and when it's on a GTO with endura bumpers and a vinyl top!


The hood and front fenders look pretty good honestly. The top is shot, and the rest decklid isn't far behind it. Rough rough. In fact, the imprint of the tarp might be too rough to wrap! Didn't think about that until now...

Might be able to find someone to respray the bad panels. There’s a lot of paint blending going on to try matching original but faded paint on ‘patina cars’ that are so popular nowadays.

The price of complete paint jobs has risen into the stratosphere, a big part of the reason cars with faded or even somewhat damaged original paint just get driven and enjoyed.

If perfection is your thing then you’ll have to pay for it. If you can live with having a less than perfect car maybe just cleaning and polishing up what you have can be satisfying.

Pictured below is my faded original paint 1956 VW panel bus. Everyone loves it and it’s far from perfect but they appreciate the history they see in it.

Even if you do decide to wrap it I suspect it's going to be a lot better if the surface is at least smooth.

I agree.

It's totally a great driver as is, honestly. For the time being, I'm just going to clean it up and kill bugs! Drive it and let her stretch her legs...

In one of the photos you can sorta kinda see how rough the top is.

One photo showed her with PMD rally wheels, which I really like.

Have you thought about seeing if someone skilled could just blend the roof in? They probably won't be able to get it perfectly matched but I think the car's paint overall looks good right now. If you just get the roof painted it will look even better, even if it's just close.
I'm nowhere near an expert though... And personally, I'm probably the minority but, I love that expresso brown color.

Maybe while you are wrapping you could do that chrome front bumper, too. Give you a poor man's endura look front end, if you prefer it.

Jim Mattison had a blue Ram Air II car with a steel bumper painted body color. It was pretty convincing.

I agree. I personally like the brown and think the 68 and 69 a-bodies are iconic cars. The one-year Custom S is unique so that adds a lot of interest. I'd be thrilled if my car looked that good but respect your desire to change it.

I'm a fan of the chrome bumper and think it looks great with dark colors like your brown, verdoro, or midnight green.

I have never seen a wrapped car in person (at least that I recognized), other than advertising stuff, but I know Ben (rambow on this forum, upholstery guru) has a Chevelle he wrapped and the pics I've seen make it look great. You might send him a PM and see if he'd be willing to share photos and his experience.
