Default Hot coil

When the ignition is in the on position the coil gets super hot. Burn't one out so I thouht it was a bad coil .Replaced it but it still gets hot. Fast. Any ideas.Thanks

What kind of ignition system do you have? A standard points ignition may very well do that, so don't leave the key in the ignition ON position without the engine running for long periods. If you need the accessories on, use the ACC position.

It,s doesn't have points any more. I heard it could burn the points but not a coil. Another expensive lesson. Thanks

Pay attention to the instruction with your non point system, some still require the use of a ballast resistor to limit the voltage to the coil. Can also burn out coil if no resistor is used.

Some of the point conversion brands say don't leave the switch on without the engine running. It'll burn the conversion module/ignitor up same as a set of points.

That lesson would probably be even more expensive.

Adding to what Lemans64 said,
The original Pertronix Ignitor directions says leave resistor to coil, BUT the ignitor itself use straight switched battery voltage. Something their directions isn't real clear about.
