Default Teach me about relays, i got questions

lAST YR. i installed one in the trunk of my 67 gto for my electric fuel pump, one ground, one feed and a return so i bought this at radio shack, question is are all relays equal?? are there better one,s out there, Mine is plastic and is mounted to the wheelhouse. Ground wire is bolted to the hinge with a very small screw. For cruising i sure don,t want this thing to go out in the middle of the highway so again is there better ones out there?? Teach me im all ears??? LOL Please make it simple though.

I use Bosch 30 or 40 amp relays for most circuits. The ground connection is for operation of the coil which is a low current application. The power connection to the end devise is done via the relay contacts which are rated for different amperage, power. Should 1 fail and you don't have a spare or something melted it is a simple matter of directly connecting the power lead to the load (the 2 larger wires) via the connector or a quick splice. All the wiring is there. Sorta of red neck but will get you home.

I keep spares around. One in my "kit" in the car since they are so cheap. Only thing you need to use to test is a small jumper with alligator clips or a test light.

If you use alligator clips, get the ones with insulaion over the part of the clips you touch though :-) I got a nice jolt yesterday because I couldn't find one and use one with bare alligator clips. Nothing like a hit from a coil but it will wake you up.

Play400 has it right. Bosch relays are the only thing to use as far as relays. I've got 27 years in the automotive aftermarker electrical field, and as far as reliability is concerned nothing else even comes close. Make sure the ground is nice and clean, and use good connectors.

Bosch relay for a fuel pump would be wired like this: 30 12v feed, 86 12v ignition source, 85 ground, 87 fuel pump pos input, and ground the fuel pump ground wire.

Straight lines represent terminals sticking out.
Looking at the relay from terminal end, 3 terminals are vertical and 1 or 2 are horizontal depending on what type you have. Some have one horizontal terminal 87 and some have two 87 and 87A.

If you can figure out the above pic.
87 goes to component/fuel pump.
86 switched power supply to turn it on.
85 straight to ground.
30 battery/power supply.

No you shouldn't.

The relay should control power to a fuel pump. What is more likly to happen a short to ground of a short to power? It is just safer this way.

That's as good a place as any for the relay ground. AS LONG AS you've got the body grounded good. The factory block to firewall strap is plenty for that.
