I had zero issues with that part of the installation on my 1977 with Hooker headers. My moderate issues were with the crappy looking multi-piece tailpipes used with the splitters on the transverse mounted muffler, and the poor rear axle brake hose and hard steel fuel line clearance with the drivers side mid pipe. The only positives I will give the system is the tucked up appearance, the quality of the header flange pipes, and the sound quality. The system with two mufflers might not have these issues.

I have the one with the two mufflers and I'm reading that some kits don't reach the headers up front and require a spliced in piece to reach...
Hopefully that's not the case but time will tell Thanks

I had to order the header collector flange pipes separately. They connected to the X pipe. They were the best part of the entire system.

It been a few years since my Pypes 2.5" X pipe system was installed on my 79 TA. Installing the system was a PITA for me. It would have been much easier had the car been on a lift versus 3 ton jack stands.
I too went with the crossflow transverse muffler from Pypes and the chrome splitters to give that original TA look. The pipes that run over the axle to the muffler could have been curved slightly differently and the driver's side pipe is very close to the hydraulic lines for the rear disc brakes. Also, the hangers provides were pretty much useless in their original form as the 79 TA never had the muffler mounted cross wise. As a result, I had to fabricate my own hangers and suspend them from locations so the transverse-cross flow Pro Race muffler would hang level and provide enough clearance for the exiting tailpipes to fit between the leaf springs and the body of the car so they didn't bump causing a rattle. It took a lot of swearing and adjusting to finally get the system to fit decently. Was I disappointed? Yes, but I've come to expect problems with anything that isn't original to the TA. |
