Rear u-joint in my 56.
Drive shaft was bent in my 56, pulled to have it straightened as best it could. When I pulled the shaft I could not see anything to help center it in the rear yoke. No notches where the cups ride, c-clips on the joint are too far inboard to help. What am I missing?
Thanks, Colt

Do the cups or saddles have C-clip grooves? My junk box has a bunch of clips that I THINK were from Pontiacs of those years.

Thanks Jack, there is a provision for c-clips on the cups but they are to far in to do any good. With clips in place there is still about 1/2 " of side to side movement. I thought maybe there was some special retainer of some sort that was missing.

Rock Auto shows pictures of all the 56 U joints they sell, and they all show inner cir-clips on all 4 caps, on every version..............
It shows the dimension as 2.256" as the distance from outer edge of the clips. The one you linked to is a double cardan CV type joint from my experience. I also owned a 56 probably close to 50 years ago, so as Jack said, too long ago to remember that particular detail.

Would this drawing from the Pontiac 1960 Master Parts Catalog help or just confuse the issue?

From that GM parts book drawing, it looks like the same joint as he showed from the AMAZON link. Rock Auto obviously has misinformation on their replacement parts, not the first time the aftermarket was wrong though.

I thought 55 was the last year of the mechanics u joint and 56 went to a regular style 3010 joint? I have an extra 55 driveshaft if your looking, would have to double check it against your length
