So let me get this straight....

74 SD Formula, with a 4spd, vin matched and code correct block, correct dated carb, dash vin with X in it, and PHS shows LS2 engine option according to Jim Mattison. Door tag and PHS sheet list T as engine code.

I'm reversing my opinion on this one - at $20k I would say it's a buy and if I hadn't just bought a car, I'd be PM'ing too.....even though it's yellow!

Very similar but slightly different mistake with Pat Brown's Lucy Blue 72 HO. X in the vin but no HO engine option on the PHS. The car was an HO, but documentation didn't say so.

I dont think the PHS shows it having a LS2 option. I think thats where the problem is.

Not a problem, just very interesting.

Goes to show you that mistakes were made!

It's a good thing that the entire VIN matches excepting the engine code (for title issues, etc).

All of which begs another interesting question - which VIN is shown on the title??? In Texas, it's quite a big deal to title a Canadian vehicle for a Texas resident. I'd imagine that's the case in most states.

In Texas as a matter of fact, a local PD official is required inspect the vehicle and paperwork to determine if it's been stolen, before it can be titled in TX.

By the way, as superdutybob posted earlier, the engine VIN stamp should read 24N172391, no "X" in the engine VIN stamp.

Thanks for posting the details, Domenic, and please keep us informed.

Not being up on these cars and I realize the nomenclature might not have been changed on the invoice, but did the BW T-10 replace the Muncie late in the model year?

Interesting car, I would like to see the complete PHS...

The BW trans replace the Muncie around March of 74. They are all considered close ratio therefore the M21 designation on the invoice. No 74 SD 4 speed car was built with the Muncie trans.

Another interesting thing I think I learned is that the 4 speed was a costed option on a Formula. The 4 speed was a N/C option on a T/A and would not be shown on the invoice. That is the reason that verifying a real 4 speed is difficult without a build sheet.

Someone went berzerk with # stamps in the VIN area!

Unfortunately it's most likely NOT the OE block . . .

Bob, thanks for the info...you learn something new everyday.

That VIN 'stamp' is crazy...

Interesting reading about this one.

The October GTOAA Legend has a very interesting story by a member who worked at PMD from 64 to 95. He worked in varied departments and a couple of things he mentions are worth noting. He mentions that he made replacement VIN tags when incorrect VIN tags were found on the line or even at the dealership. So there definately were VIN mistakes that made it out of the factory, it was his job to correct them.

Also worth noting (but not related to the yellow SD) is that he mentions personally seeing engine castings found during inventories that were 12 mths old that were not scrapped but sent to the line for use!!

I hope he continues to write a regular column, it's interesting hearing from someone that was there with such an insight into stuff that interests and raises questions from us.

That block stamping is a ripper, maybe it was their first time and they had a bit of a practice go first?

Since the VIN shows as a SD car, is this car accounted for in the offical production figures for SD Formula's?
