What is this thing on the heater hose
In checking out my engine for a change to a more factory type air cleaner, I pulled off the 14" open element air cleaner and tried on the factory style one only to discover the new filter assembly sat on top of this round black thing connected to the heater hose. The unknown thing had a small vacuum hose going to a small metal thing underneath it. I've seen other GTO's at shows that did not have this round black thing. Before messing with it I better find out what it is and what it does.

It’s a vacuum operated heater control valve.
It turns off the flow of water into the heater core when you have the AC on so there not fighting each other.

If this is on your 68 GTO, someone added it. 68s didn't use a heater valve.

Yep, it's a 1968 GTO with 1969 Grand Prix 428 and TH400. With factory air ducts on the dash. Could be the person who did the engine swap decided to use the Grand Prix heater valve. Explains why I didn't see it on other '68's.

Some folks add heater-control valves because the air door(s) inside the ductwork don't seal properly. Then the A/C becomes weak, and--if the car was used in actual winter--the heater would also be weak, both from air bleeding into the desired system from the un-desired system.
The heater control valve could be there to improve A/C performance, because it's easier to cram an aftermarket heater valve in the hose, than to tear-apart the under-dash HVAC plenum. |

My thanks to steve25, OG68, and Schurkey for their great info on my little mystery. The heater valve sounds like a good thing to have so its a keeper. I will deal with the air cleaner problem another way.

You try loosening the hose clamps and rotating the valve down for more clearance?
