Hey all - so yes, I own the car! Woo hoo! I pick it up next week.
Here are a few (not great) pictures. I have confirmed the following on the car: VIN: 242670P229369 Decodes to a 1970 GTO Convertible 455 HO 4-Speed Body and Interior: All Correct: Cowl Tag decodes to 1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible built in Pontiac, Michigan on the first week of March. Body number is 128156. Trim code = Black Interior, Paint is Atoll Blue with Black convertible top which all match the current colours. Came from the factory with a tachometer and rally gauges. Body and undercarriage are solid, but I need to investigate the quality of some of the work a bit more. The previous restoration seems very good but owned has no pictures - he bought the car at a US auction many years ago. Everything works... Block is correct and original. All three numbers check out: a) the casting number is correct for 1970 454 GTO made for 1970 models only and denotes 4-bolt main bearings for the HO engine, b) the partial VIN stamp matches the car's VIN, and c) the engine unit number is correct WA = 1970 455 HO 4 barrel with 4-speed transmission. Heads are correct/original with "64" on centre exhaust ports and date code is L169 = heads were cast on December 16, 1969 which makes sense. Intake Manifold: It is the correct 9799068 unit. Carb: is a replacement unit. Anyone have the correct carb for sale or know where I can find one??? Transmission: Is an incorrect replacement unit - M20 from between 1964 and 1967 but date stamp decodes to July 30, 1970?? Would love to put the correct transmission in - any hot tips here as to where I can find one? Much appreciated! Rear End: is a 12-bolt. Correct casting number 9968278 decodes to late 1969–1970 Pontiac A-body cars, including 1970 GTO & Judge. Did not come from the factory as a posi but has been converted into one. It's in really good shape and now needs the engine pulled and painted and just a lot of detail work and love to get it to a higher standard. Added bonus is the original bill of sale. I am excited to have a nearly original car, one of 158 ever made and I pledge to preserve the history and drive the car too! Please let me know your thoughts. I paid about US $42,000 for the car which I think was a great deal. What do you think? The seller is a wonderful guy, has some health issues and also was only willing to sell to a local buyer who would come to him in his remote location. Ultimately I had to drive there three times at over 7 hours round trip each time to get the deal done... one more to pick her up next week! Thanks to everyone who helped me on this journey. Your help was invaluable and gave me confidence to make this investment. Ryan |

I think in today's market, it was a good buy. Expect to spend some good money to purchase a '70 close ratio transmission with the correct drive gear.

That’s a nice looking car with some good options! Price seems very reasonable..Honestly since the original trans is gone and the rear gears probably in the lower 300 range you’d probably enjoy the m20 trans more than a 21. The m21 has a 2.20 first gear and when you couple that with let’s say a 3.31 gear ,taking off isn’t the greatest experience… especially if you’re on a hill. That’s how my 70 came and the new tkx with the 2.87 first gear is much more enjoyable driving. Even with a 2.87 and 3.31 rear it’s still far from steep geared in first gear.

The level of expertise and engagement on this forum just blows me away!
I feel like I want to get the correct transmission and carb in place just so the car is pretty much the way god intended, and I think this is good for the long-term value as well. Is eBay the best place to look? I can see what I am looking for, BUT WOW $$$ !! |

7040 267’s aren’t cheap and then to get a correct one with the right parts and not a factory replacement. I think they’re all like 69 build dates but not positive. I found a decent one and then sent it to Cliff for a rebuild. It’s been awhile but I might have 1k in it now. At least they’re not ram air carb prices.

Other than eBay - can anyone recommend the best sources for vintage parts?
I am going to have a look for the correct carb and M21 for my car. Just feels like this needs to be done! Thanks all! |

Vintage parts….Frank’s is a name that pops up most often. Swap meets, local for sale people ( Craigslist, FB marketplace, etc. ), even some junkyards still have old cars you can roam through.
Watch out for the carb tho, if dead set on a correct one, restamps are a going concern. You’d probably not like spending good coin on one, only to find out it’s a fake. As you have found out, this place is a great source of info, so if you’re looking at a carb post pictures before buying, some here can spot a fake a mile away.
