Default Looking for feedback on Popular Muscle Car Auctions versus Online Auctions

Fellow Enthusiasts,

Unfortunately, the time has come for me to sell my beloved 72 T/A and would like feedback from those having recent experience in selling or buying a muscle car such as ours. I have previously only purchased from private parties and never sold a muscle car since becoming a true adult (many regrets of the ones I sold when I was young). But others are suggesting that it's easier to just have an auction house sell it for me. What are your experiences and opinions of popular Muscle Car Auctions and popular Online Auctions? PM me if necessary

Auction house will keep 5-10% of the selling price..

What have you got? Maybe post some pix and place an ad on this site...
No doubt selling a car is a hassle.

As you know Blaze living in Phoenix all the big auctions are coming up. Not just BJ and Russo Steele, but a lot of the smaller ones like the Silver Auctions.

I'm not saying you should run the car across the auction block, but what these auctions bring to Arizona are a ton of buyers this time of year.

Me personally I would be taking the car to the Pavilions cruise on these auction weekends as the cruise will be flooded with buyers and sellers before and after the auction and I've watched cars trade hands like crazy there every year. Not only that but it's free and costs you nothing but your time.

You also have the option of advertising it at Goodguys at Westworld happening this weekend. Get the car out, get it seen. I'm willing to bet it would be a pretty easy sell at that price, especially at the Pavilions come January. If you're at Goodguys I'll be there, and would be interested in taking a look at it myself.

Hope that helps and goodluck

My 2 cents:

Online Auction pluses:
- Cost usually under $200
- Buyer comes to you or arranges shipping.
- Buyer can communicate with owner/seller before sale

Online Auction minuses:
- Calls/Emails from game players, tire kickers and/or scammers
- Non Payment after auction is somewhat common, leads to re-listings
- May not bring buyers for higher end cars
- Typically for cars under $30K

On site Auctions pluses:
- Ease of sale (buyers are vetted)
- Exposure to many veteran buyers and collectors
- Auction house takes care of sale and all paperwork

On site minuses:
- Sales commission cost up to 10% of sale
- Base entry fee of around $500
- Cost & time of bringing vehicle to auction site

I'll add a couple more to those excellent ideas:

Unless you can afford (and they will accept you) prime time spaces at a major auction, 95% of the buyers are dealers and flippers. Therefore you can expect wholesale value. Also, in your case, you would need to fix the seat, change the wheels and completely detail the car. (Time and money out of your pocket).

If you must have retail value you've got to find the right retail customer. A large cruise in or swap meet is probably your best bet.

Ebay has become a site of bottom feeders and bargain hunters. You could possibly land a retail customer, but they probably won't be the highest bidder.

Bring a Trailer seems to be the best online auction going.

Thanks for the feedback Formulajones. I live in the NW Phoenix but haven't taken it to the Pavilions in years. I will plan to take it there this weekend to start showing it so more around town. I'll try to get the rally's on after this weekend, since most seem to be sold that way. I really just want it to go to a good home.

Thanks for the 2 cents Tripower. I want to have a square deal with someone who is not just trying to flip the car. I like the onsite auction idea more since there will be quite a few here in Phoenix soon, but I didn't know about that entry fee, so thanks for that critical info.

Thanks JerryH. I have also heard of Bring a Trailer and one of local sport car guys also pointed me to that site. Thanks for the advice I will check out BAT and I will try to get out to some of the local cruise-ins.

Any way you sell the car you can't be concerned with who buys it (if you truly want to sell it). My attitude has always been I don't care if they run it off a cliff once I've got the cash in my hand.

I would correct a few things, and attempt to get a decent spot at a good auction. I have been jerked off so much on eBay, I am starting to enjoy it. No fun selling for sure.

You're welcome Blake. We are up in Prescott and do the Pavilions cruise on a semi regular basis. We'll be there Saturday night for the cruise after a day at Goodguys in Westworld. Not sure what time, depends on when we roll out of there. Pavilions will be extra crowded thanks to Goodguys.

Thanks Formulajones, I will try to be at the Pavilions early Saturday at about 4 PM. Funny that you mention that you are in Prescott, the reason that I am selling is to help the spouse and I get a small home there to retire.
