I'll have to ask my son for some pics. Frankly, I've been avoiding it. I just can't look. I'm not being all negative about it and I'm sure that my son understands.
But forensically it might be an interesting thing to post up. I'll let you know.

My son received a bunch of staples straight across the top of his head. It looks like a zipper. He also got some stitches across his chest where the horn bar went through his shirt and through his skin. Deep, not scary deep, but deep enough to teach him a lesson alright. There was some soul searching on my end knowing how close the hood, on a forty five degree angle, like the point of a weapon, went through the windshield and grazed his head. I told him that his luck is used up and don't do that again.

Wow, I am sorry for what happened.

I agree with Andre, don't let this loss get you discouraged and keep you from making a good decision.

Don't let the insurance company take your car, too many good parts still there
You still have, engine, transmission, rear end, almost a complete interior, rear bumper, trunk lid, all kinds of trim and glass, ...etc.

Keep your eyes out for a decent 66/7 2 door ( drive train and color not important) and decide from there.

Good Luck, and try to look at what you have left, not what you have lost. (I know that is tough to do, but you still have a lot to build around)

after looking at the pics again, I see a 'kink' in the drivers side rear quarter as a result of the firewall being pushed back, but I wonder if the body/shell of the car could be saved? fixed, and put on a replacement frame.

The A pillar/ front door jamb would have to be pulled forward. ...if that is possible, the cost just became a lot less. ......... 4004spd would know if that can be done.

Good Luck,

Cars are replaceable, sons are not. You both now have an opportunity before you to bring that girl back to life. Together. Heck, we’re all Pontiac people! We can bring ANY hunk of scrap iron back to life!

I had to rotate the pics for an easier look but it seems to me that if the hood went through the windshield a bit lower, you wouldn’t have a son to be mad at.

Anyone can have a nice car. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to have a son. Now is the time to show him just how much he means to you. JMHO. . . .

Default Kicking a man when he is down

This could apply to your son or you.

Others have stated that your son is by far more important than the car. I am sure if things had gone a different way, you would have chosen your son back in exchange of the car.

I have seen my son sick from Covid 19, and not being able to do anything about it. Trying to get him to drink water and not being able to do that. Not eating and just sleeping. Watching him for days and wondering if he will ever get out of the bed again. Checking to see if he was even breathing.

My son does things that are a mind f#%K, but in perspective to him having been that sick, not such a big deal anymore. I am ashamed of admitting to everyone reading my admission of having to see my son that sick to change my appreciation/gift of himas a son. I am a #1 Douchbag, or whatever fits here.

Hell, were all human. We all love our cars or we wouldn’t be hereon this forum. And I’m sure we all love our kids. I don’t think the OP doesn’t love his son. Just expressing his regret about a car he probably put a lot of blood and sweat into.

Very nice car right there.
Been tryin to stay away from this thread but it just keeps poppin up...

OK so it looks terrible, but all in all, you and your son are very blessed men.
You have your son and thank God your son is not responsible for anyone's death!

Buy it back, fix it, or use it as a donor, if not for you, for your family members here.
You can see there are plenty of people who would be elated to see you do either.

On the other hand here is a car that for obvious reasons had very little hope of helping anyone.
A friend did get the motor and rear, the tranny was broken and some of the interior burnt.
We broke a few bones and got the bark knocked off in spots but at least he didn't kill us.

Might seem a lame thing to say ... but I'd look at that like God gave me a challenge to over come. Son still alive, car hurtin but still alive. Dig right in there and get to work, you have something better to do with your time? Maybe. Sweet car, I'd want that back on the road in a couple years. You can make it happen.

Here's a few pics of the car in the lot and one right after the accident. Not the best pics but they do give an indication of the damage to the entire structure of the car. Take a look at the sill plate in the one interior shot. And look at the headliner after the accident. It's like the whole car got pinched at the point of impact We've been exploring every option, from fixability to replacement of the car entirely. The thing is we just don't have the resources to effect a major repair. Everything we've done to this car was completed literally in the dead of winter in an open storage yard, or in our driveway in the heat of summer. And we sure as heck can't afford a shop to repair it.
I did express my thoughts on the potential that my son could have received life altering injuries or worse. I try to perish the though but it goes through my mind here and there, and it's tough to take. So many things could have happened. These old cars don't stand a chance against a modern vehicle. The minivan had some good damage but the superstructure was uncompromised.
I was debating even getting another classic, but my son is adamant and in his own words he did learn a lesson that you can't toss one of these into a turn like our new little Subaru.
Thanks again everyone for your sentiments. You'll always be the first to know what we are doing car-wise.

Thanks for posting again. The scary picture of the extended steering column confirms how far back the left rail and steering box are. That's why the collapsible column was used in 1967.
The lower cowl/sill area is where the front wheel went on impact.
Yes, your son is extremely fortunate.

Many of the comments here.. like the one above.. make it sound like you should be giving your son a pat on the back for wrecking your car. Yes.. You should be happy your son is ok as it could've been a lot worse... Wrecking your car should come with a stiff punisment as it was clearly his fault for being stupid. I'm sure he feels bad.. He should also know that you are not happy with his actions. I wouldn't let him drive any of my cars ever again. I'm sure the touchy feely crowd won't agree with my comments... but oh well..

No worries. It's all good. I see it both ways. But it kind of boils down to him getting injured, but not too bad. So when we established that, then yes I was upset about the car. Mostly about all the work I put into it. And the money.
What's not helping is the fact that the insurance company is running with so few people and with all of the current protocols, that they havent even looked at the car. It will be two weeks on Monday and really I can't make a decision until they tell me the payout, the number on buying the car back, etc. So that's making it hard to move on and strategize our next move. I've seen a few deals come and go and you know what that's like for a car guy.

Still a ton of desirable parts there, well worth buying back, you could make
enough from parts to pay for another car if added to your reimbursement.

Don't worry, be happy!

I don't know if the car I posted earlier showed up but this is what total junk looks like,
your car on the other hand is still a car, take what you can, tomorrow's a new day.

Was my best friend driving, my 18th birthday, should have killed everyone old enough to die, or at least one of the two, but we were blessed. I can't imagine how he would have gotten through life if... Make sure he knows how lucky he is.

Sounds like your friend had poor parenting skills for it to have gotten to that point. A true friend such as yourself should've stepped in and offered assistance. Maybe offered to help the young lad with a place to stay. I'm sure with your helping hand.. all of that could've been avoided.

We can exchange blows all night if you'd like....

Have a nice evening.....

Pent up anger and resentment about your own childhood isn't healthy. Consider counseling.
