Hi,
The paint job on my 68 GTO is about done. I need to know the measurements to install the white GTO decals on the rear fender in front of the emblem. Thanks, Mike

Same here. I tried to center it up visually on the arrowhead marker and quarter panel, but I didn't do any precise measurements.

It depends on the color combination of your car. For Verdoro Green all you could get was white, regardless of interior color. For a red car with a black interior you got a black decal, with a red or white interior you got a white decal. Same goes for the pinstripes aka rally stripes. Below is the chart from the resto guide.

I'll try to figure out a way to measure mine and send the measurements. One side of my car is original.

Greg Reid posted a link below "68 owners may enjoy this". There is a picture of this decal in the article from 1968.

I enjoy the Trim chart. Owned a 68GTO trim code "N", and now " A ". HIS

This is from Motor Trends story on the 68 winning it's car of the year award.
I think this would make a good reference as to placement of the decal.

I measured mine before a paint job in 1980. Original decal on the rear fender was forward of the arrowhead centerline to the front of the decal 10.75" The height of the top of the decal was just below the top first letter on the arrowhead. Of course level is most important. use a long tape mark from the arrowhead forward to front fender parallel to the bottom of the sill.

Looks good. Pretty sure they were eyeballed at the factory also. I have seem lots of factory literature with a variety of different placement. High, low, etc.

If you look at enough photos from the 1968 era you'll see that there was definitely some variance in the placement from the very beginning. If you make it horizontally straight with the marker lamp as a reference and place it very slightly above center and 'about' one half of one letter's width from that marker, you'll be good.
Here's where I put mine and I didn't sweat about it too long when I placed it. Just used the old TLAR method..ie, 'That looks about right'...

Not sure why this thread was brought up but glad it was, I would say the answer depends on the build date and or assembly plant. The early sales literature I have seen shows the decal being at the top of the marker light, similar to what's emulated on the two early Kansas cars. Perhaps the original design placed it at the top of the marker light and then at some point later changed to be more marker light centered.
I find it hard to believe that it would be left to the plant to decide the placement of the decal in the original design of the 68 GTO. Although there could have been a directive to change the location, centered more on the marker light, which may have led to a plant aspect. I find it even harder to believe that it would be left to workers on the line to decide where it was going to be placed on any particular day. That's not to say there were not exceptions I'm sure, but in most cases I would think there was a proper method for location, using a template. As "dataway" said, "his looks low" and is the exception, it appears that the decal was placed under the stencil line instead of above it. If a decal were to be applied right above the one on his car it would likely be in the correct location, to me it's not a haphazard application, just a mistake. It would make more sense if a design change had occurred and a plant aspect was involved, rather than the comments of indiscriminate placement. I realize there are 'slight' variations as "Greg Reid" mentions, but there is also two distinct locations, that's my point, a early/late location, or plant variation. I am still looking to find more early original examples like the two Kansas built cars shown, if I remember correctly the other cars posted here are all later builds. Also notice the two Kansas Verdoro cars, one with White, one with Black, contrary to the trim chart posted which lists only White for Verdoro. Is this another case with the early cars? Doesn't seem it would be a plant specific thing, please post if you have a uncommon combination, thank you in advance. Anyone who can share info of their car I posted and also anyone with images of their original decal location would be greatly appreciated, again thanks in advance. There was a prior discussion on this but I would like to see a more definitive answer for us all. I have no idea on the build date of my old Mayfair Maize car. Owned it back in the early 80s and I have nothing left from it.

Lastly, I have to mention (as I always do when this topic comes up) - our stickers washed off our brand new '68 the first time we took it through an automated car wash. Dad left them off at that point. Quote:
