Default 1964 Grand Prix Rear quarter repair

Hey fellas. The back of the drivers side was hit back in the day before I got it. Moving to complete the repair and looking for thoughts on how to weld the replacement in. My dad thinks welding the donor over the existing then cleaning with body filler. Butt weld is an option too and may only save a skiff of filler.

I don’t butt weld....I have an air tool that makes a “step Down” in the sheet metal ...so both panels fit flush...then weld ,grind, then lead ...or body filler

A butt weld would be the cleanest fix (a seam has the possibility of collecting water and rusting) but it depends on your welding skills - it will be difficult to avoid warping unless you really know what you're doing.

If you know someone who can TIG like a boss then I would butt-weld (you'll need to have ZERO gap and perfect alignment) otherwise I'd stamp a flange in the panel and smooth it out with a skim of filler (under 3mm thickness). To ensure you don't have massive lows/highs with your repair I'd check out body splines (like what is used in boat-building). They are like a malleable straight-edge to help you see if your style lines are true. I got mine from this Aussie company but I'm not sure if Eastwood or someone like that would make them in the USA? http://www.melomotive.com/spline-set-9pc

I'm going to have to go through a similar repair though over a much, much larger area and on both sides of the car. I have purchased repair sections from Classic 2 Current to weld in but will have to spend bulk time getting the curves right as the repair sections don't have the right angles to the body lines.

I'm going to use Cleco fasteners to hold the panel before I weld it in and will hopefully be able to patch the upper sections individually. The area where the badges were I will have to hammer that out as it is all too low, too..

Here are the replacement sections.

This is what I'm up against.

Thanks Marv. I may be able to crimp the panel up the central body line and then butt weld that. Thanks all

I'd definitely look into using Clecos, mate. They will help hold the panel exactly where you want it, allowing a precision cut and fit, which improves your chances of not needing a lot of heat to weld the panel in, reducing possible warpage, increasing win,

Good luck! Can't wait to see the results!

C clamp vice grips will also work. I did a lot of butt welds on the doors it’s just this particular part is tough, in a corner spot. I thought I could use the C2C panel but this spot isn’t stamped out by them. I want this sob on the road! 4 years I been looking at it. Lol
