This was the 80s, but I guess it's vintage now.

Remember "afros"? I had a nice one, 1979. Also had a "leisure suit" that I had to wear for my 1977 graduation photo because my mother liked them.

My $400 dragster - bought it & had to sell it. My $100 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan with flathead - drove it about 6 months and sold it for $350. 1973 Mercury Capri 2600CC German made V6, 4-speed, headers & dual exhaust - ran like a raped ape and sounded like a Ferrari, but I over revved it and spun a rod. Installed another engine and then the car got hit by another driver and totaled. $400 1954 Buick Century - 322CI automatic w/switch pitch converter, added duals, and that car would fly. Sold it after a couple months for $450. My 1956 before getting junked. Had owned it about 10 years after it got totaled in the nose. Never had a storage place and shuffled it from friends back yards to another. Had to move it again and decided I had had enough moves. 1955 nose installed & it had a 347CI out of the '57 I scrapped. Took a couple of last goodby pics smoking the tires off down to the canvas and called the junk man.

Who doesn't like smoking tires? This is my former wife's '65 Impala SS convertible that I built up a solid cammed 409CI/4-speed and replaced the 283CI/powerglide. With the original peg leg rear end, and probably 3.08 gears, I could put down about 250 feet of rubber. Later I installed a big car posi and M-50's and I could still fry the tires about 50 feet. The '65 was rough but I did a little work on it and hid everything with a coat of grey primer - but I had to add the GTO hood scoops I got from my '68 GTO I was junking. The hood was badly bent, so I skinned the scoops. Divorce was pending and out came the 409CI and in went another 283/powerglide I bought. I stored the 409. Later I bought a super clean rust free southern 1967 Olds Delta 88 with a bad engine for $250. It was red. I installed the 409CI/TH-400 and painted the car with Rustoleum and a brush. I had to "beat" a hood bubble into the hood to clear the air cleaners. The bent hood was compliments of my second wife as she forgot to latch the hood one day and up and over the roof it went being completely ripped off. Missed the windshield. Spun a rod bearing during a smokey burnout and pulled the 409 and replaced it with a '68 Pontaic 400. The car towed a trailer during my move from CT to NC. I believe the trans went out and I junked the Olds and sold the 409 for $600 when no one wanted these engines, complete from dual carbs to pan and the '65 exhaust manifolds.

OK, got it. If you size up the photo you will see that the crew is hoisting up a very rare 1963 SD 421 engine to re-power the engine that just seized up on the blimp. It is right there behind the gondola hanging in the air. Very cool!

That’s why that ‘63 Catalina is sitting so high in the front, they just stole the motor out of it!

Not sure either of these have been posted before? Thought I had a picture of Joe Weatherly standing by the car pre-race but can't find it?
