How bad is your QJ that it need to be colored? If it’s not bad and you’re looking for some guidance on building it yourself, I’m up in Omaha. Maybe we can get together one weekend and I can watch over your shoulder as you do the work.

4L80 for best results... no mechanical link contraptions to carb.

those Q-JET casting colors look just fine.
Replace/renew the sheet metal Choke crap, and wire-brush then clearcoat the Driver side linkages, and be done. Slap it on and diagnose the; Idle, and warmup choke setting (fast-idle) to kick down nicely. the Part-Throttle Choke Pull-Off ability (to not bog). the Secondary Rods mixture for HP ( go to Thin tips to start-out Rich, and then lean out to you satisfaction). Only worry is Fuel needle-seat which can be handled anytime; goal is to reach using a 0.135" dia seat hole. You only need an "Expert" if your Engine Vacuum is low due to. huge cam. Getting back to basics. On carburetor CFM I have a 400 with 300-325 horse power what size quadrajet would I be looking for.
The more I learn it looks like for pontiac most were 750 cfm. Is there a spec page on engine horse power and carb used. Thanks Greg |

Greg,
750 cfm is the starting size on Qjet and if Rocky is close to you I would recommend you get with him as he is a great resource in the Pontiac world.

Your 750 cfm 7041264 is a perfect candidate and will attain all your needs once properly renewed/adjusted.

Chevy bolt pattern on all 4L80Es, easily adapted to a Pontiac with a plate adapter for about $50. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/60172/10002/-1 |

I want to thank everybody for the information in this thread. It6 seems like very few wrap their finding and info.
So here goes. I determined I am getting 12 miles to gallon I have been given some good suggestions on rebuilders My quadrajet is probably a good candidate for the engine. I can put and electric choke on it. I bought an air fuel mixture gauge and will install it. I have some work to do here and I will post my findings in a couple weeks. Thanks again. |

Your goal in doing this is to gain 2MPG? Seriously? You could likely get through this and end up with the same MPG and a significantly lighter wallet. The carb is just one element of the tune. Changing out a carb isnt necessarily going to resolve your MPG issues. There is likely much more going in your situation than just a mis-tuned carb. You also need to focus on your ignition system (initial and total timing), timing curve, vacuum advance to start with.
To improve MPG on my old Pontiac I leave it in the garage and drive a vehicle that gets 20+ MPG.. Oh, and if you do decide to rebuild the Q-jet, take Rocky up on his offer. He invited me to his house ages ago and we put my distributor on his machine and curved it. Rocky is a super nice and very knowledgeable Pontiac guy.

Real world experience on MPG
I've been down this (lets say optimistic) road of "converting" a 64 or 65 GTO into a gas sipper that gets 20+ MPG. Save yourself the aggravation and don't believe the fantasy.
It won't get 20+ MPG. Its a matter of physics, weight, drag coefficient and volumetric efficiency of these old motors such that NOTHING is gonna give you a 20 MPG set up. I've tried the 2.56 rear end and had the 700R4 with the lockup and the Q Jet "tuned" for high gas mileage, etc. TRUTH = only marginal gains. Def not a 20+ MPG highway cruiser. At the end of the day, you're gonna improve mileage from a stock 7-10 city and 12-14 highway about 15-20% max. Sure, with properly set up highway gear and/or overdrive tranny you'll be able to feather it and get 16-18 cruising at 60-65 on a flat midwestern highway. But that's it - at best. It's a matter of physics (a 3600-3800 pound mass), bad aerodynamics/drag coefficient (by modern standards) and the fact that Pontiac 400 is just not gonna sip gas, no matter how low you get the revs on the highway. And even with the low rpm, then you have to open the throttle more to get it moving no matter how you have it jetted - it's just a unwinnable and ungainable equation. JUST enjoy your car and don't worry about saving 20-50 bucks a month on gas if its a daily driver. If it's a weekend car, there's just no point IMHO. You wont reach your 20+ MGP fantasy goal and it would take a decade to recoup the investment in a Gearvendors overdrive, or 700R4 or rear end swap or new carb, etc.. Just my real world experience - I tried this with my 65 GTO (not attainable) and I daily drive my 74 Lemans.

If $ is no object why not just buy the gas?
