A friend of mine has a 67 Camaro and has installed Calvert Split Mono Leafs and Caltracks on his car. After shimming the rear for pinion angle he is left with the bottom plates up to 1/2" away from the bottom of the perch.


Question: Does this look normal to have the plate that far away from the perch?

It's got 4 nice size bolts thru it. Where could it go ?

Thanks for the reply. Appears nobody know anything about rearends. lol... From the reading I've done, it sounds like the plate is to be sandwiched against the spring perch.
Oh well, moving on..

Thats not uncommon if he's using the aluminum wedges to get the angle he wants. Just need to make sure the center bolt is still long enough to still go up in the perch. Ideally the best way is to position the housing at the angle you want on a new perch then weld the new perch(s) to the housing but thats not always the case. I currently have one shim under the wife's car to get the angle I wanted and haven't had any issues. LOTS of miles and LOTS of passes on the car without any problems..

Did this on several 1st gen Birds. Never had a problem. Obviously, if there is nothing on top of the spring that will locate the housing perch, with a wedge in place, the rear could slide in either direction. So, just look to see if the locator sticks thru the wedge enuff to locate the perch.

Looks that way to me but that is opposite what I usually see. The 4WD truck guys have steel shims. I had to add a steel sleeve to the ones I used in the Camaro to capture the shim slide into the perch, spring bolt was in the shim on the bottom.

Yes, I do believe he put the shims in front of the axle to point it up some. That pic is the drivers side. You can see the spacing in front of the perch is wider.

I believe that was his only way to move the pinion up.

I think his spring bolt is in the bottom plate also.

Yep mine was in the bottom plate and top perch and the Caltrac plate has a hole for it.
