Changing from single to dual exhaust
I am getting close to changing from a single exhaust system.
I would like to use splitters, 64 LeMans, but not dead set on it due to the cost. I have to get a set of down pipes, Ames price, $140. The least expensive system listed is $479 and another $180 for mufflers. Miscellaneous hangers, $70 So that comes to almost $900 not including having it installed. If the price is what is normal now then I will go forward. If someone knows of a less expensive route I would appreciate the info. Anodized aluminum is fine, my current single exhaust is aluminum and has lasted 20 years.

Just for grins and chuckles, most Midas shops also have the bending cards to make pipes back that far. I would inquire if you have one locally to see if they are willing to make a system and install it for you, would only take a phone call to see if they would want to make a system and install it.
I used to work at a Independent Muffler shop many years ago and we made systems from the cards that come with the pipe bender system. A friend also had a Midas Muffler shop and his cards also went back into the sixties to bend up complete systems from straight pipe. I used his bender to make a complete 2 1/4" system for my 76 T/A. As long as they have an operator that can follow the directions on the cards and has some patience the system usually fits fine. |

Order some mufflers that you would like and take them to an independent muffler shop that bends pipe. Its the least expensive option generally.
If you just go for a straight dual system with no X pipe or H pipe, discount turbo mufflers and 2 1/4" pipe it should be reasonable and sound good for a long time. |

Yes, check around in your area to see if there's an exhaust shop that works on old cars.

FWIW, You can get a stainless 2.5" mandrel bent Pypes system from Summit Racing for as low as $545 complete with down pipes and mufflers. The Pypes systems come with hangers and clamps included.
If it's an otherwise stock 326 powered Lemans, that eBay system looks hard to beat. Maybe not the best from a performance standpoint, but fine for stock. If you decide to go for the local muffler shop route- make sure you get some references- I'd hate to end up with a half-assed system with a huge price tag!

Do yourself a favor and don't change it back into a single exhaust with an X pipe...

That Flowmaster system Chrisp showed you is a very nice set up.. I have one similar to that on my 69 el Camino. I used Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers #17749.. It sounds really good behind a stock Impala 427 Big Block..
