Dog Dish Hubcaps
I didn't know where to post this. My wife picked up two dog dish hubcaps at a barn sale. I don't know anything about them. Except that I think they're cool. Anyone know what these may be off of?

I'm no expert but I think those are 64 to 71.

These came on many different Pontiacs back in the day. Hi quality reproductions, which these may or may not be, cost about $80-100/ea.

Those look really shiny and nice. Either really nice survivors, or more likely repros.

Thanks for all of the info. I'm certain that they are originals. One has a small crack in it and a few small dents. I plan to hang them on the wall in my basement game room. My wife bought both for $27. Bargain in my book!

I don't think so. Sorry!

I think those hubcaps are keepers. Any wife who is savvy enough to buy Pontiac stuff like that (at a bargain to boot) is Definitely a keeper. Way to go!

Got ‘em on my ‘65.
The problem with originals is that if they haven’t been installed properly each time over the past 50+ years, they get out of round, and won’t stay on. Cool wall hangers, though.

Makes sense. The one with the crack would probably not stay on.

I've got a set of four originals ... they go on so tight they scare me.
I think they are made of either stainless steel or chromed non-ferrous metal like brass. They are not magnetic ... and in places where the chrome is light on the back side it looks almost like brass ... could be the copper layer from chrome plating I guess. Tons of them are fatally damaged from being removed. Really have to ease them off carefully ... just pry them off and they end up damaged. |

They’re chrome plated brass.

in my opinion, your wife made a very good purchase.
If I recall correctly, that's cheaper than I have ever been able to find them, and those look to have better chrome than the five I have purchased.

What's funny is, it was a craft type "barn sale" thing. Probably wouldn't have scored at any swap meet. One of my big scores was a '67 Chevelle SS big block floor shifter. Different because it's set up for a 400 turbo cable instead of linkage. Bought it for $25. I polished and painted it. I think I sold it for $275. |

I was always told that the installing was the tough part - hook it on two nubs, then push it on the third with your palm. I use the crowbar end of a cap hammer (covered with a shop rag) to pry ‘em off, and saved the original boxes they came in to set em in.
Always pull to make sure it’s on good - you only make that mistake once.

I've heard something like that too, which is why I have more than four.

I have seven originals...got them just before the 'poverty cap craze' set in. I have less than $50 in all seven. Mine pop right on using the heel of my hand and come off with no trouble, using a small brake adjustment too.
The one problem I had with them is that they do not fit on any of the repop steel wheels I tried them on, only my original GM steel wheels.

I've actually found that they fit the MI code wheels (Michigan Wheel) better than the Kelsey Hays wheels. I tried putting them on two K code steelies I had and they were a very, very tight fit .... granted even a couple of coats of paint alters the fit.
Personally I think they are best looking wheel treatments Pontiac made back in those days. |
